On another thread, there has been discussion about a station on the WLL to serve Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge, where I have read that if the station was built , there is inadequate capacity on the trains to manage the hoards of supporters.
This reminded me of the proposed Surrey Canal Road station. My understanding is that the proposed station at Surrey Canal Road, where substantial passive provision has already been made, is likely to open in the next couple of years. However, I have never seen any discussion on how it will cope with the hoards of Millwall /away supporters when opened. The frequency of trains on the Clapham Junction branch of the `Overground` is every 15 minutes, which cannot be easily increased. The trains will be 5 cars from December. Will the service be able to cope, assuming the station is finally completed? The trains currently are heavily used on Saturday afternoons.

It does make me wonder if they'll just do a Drayton Park and close on matchdays as is the case when Arsenal are at home.
Then again, South Bermondsey is 4tph also and remains open.

bicbasherI seem to have read (Modern Railways) that the station had to be designed with wider stairways than usual to handle match day traffic. I did Google the station, but information seems to be lacking, especially when construction will commence. We shall see in due course!

All the chatter I have heard over the past couple of years is that the station would be more like a DLR station -- very low key and quite small, and closed during football matches.

Millwall crowds are not that large.

The other thought is.... is there expected to be an increase in passengers changing at Surrey Quays from trains from Surrey Canal Road to trains heading to New Cross Gate and beyond (thereby avoiding zone 1) and if so, could Surrey Quays cope?

Surrey Quays really isn't a 'problem' station with regard to capacity or dwell times currently. Sure, people can't board sometimes northbound but that mainly applies to trains originating from West Croydon or Crystal Palace. People can always get on a New Cross and although the Clapham Junction services are pretty busy they generally have room too (even more so with 5 cars). Surrey Quays I would say has sufficient capacity as not a huge number of people transfer from a northbound service to a southbound one and really Surrey Canal Rd will make little difference. It will be a very small player compared to other stations on the Overground network.

Another LO station Norwood Junction isn't closed on matchdays, it helps that there are numerous services to distribute the fans attending Selhurst Park for Crystal Palace games alongside Selhurst station.
I can remember when I used to use the Southern Class 455 services which would get packed full of fans, however the 378's are great for adding hordes of fans.
