Hello all,
I was wondering if anyone on this forum can identify why there is a difference between shoe gear from LU C Stock? This will be C69/C77.
One I can see removed has an "L" shaped shoe with bolts in the side of the "L" with another shoe being "L" shaped and having square bolts attaching the shoe to a piece that clearly pivots within a larger housing. Any help or guidance would be hugely appreciated.
Kind regards,
Aidan.

I can only guess that one is positive shoe gear, the other negative; each attached to train differently.

That makes sense. Is there any way to distinguish between the two?

The photo below shows an outside (positive) shoe on a 1996 stock. I don't know if the C stock shoes are of the same design or not, but if one of your two looks to attach in the same way, then it's a reasonable guess that it's also a positive shoe. (click for a larger version)

Shoe gear is different than anywhere else as people cannot go walking in them

HI C69/C77 1972 D78 and 1973 tube stock have all the same posi and neg shoe gear housings and rocker links right handed and left handed and collector shoes are the same, just some of the shoe beams are different sizes and shapes but have the same shoe gear the photo of Chris is a 1996 t/stock and are spring loaded from central line stock upwards are all spring loaded and the same as 1996 t/stock. To my eye, the second one looks like the positive shoegear. The metal panel with the rectangles cut into it looks like it was meany to be attached to the shoebeam on one side, whilst the first one looks like it is top mounted. Can anyone confirm these suspicions?

Thanks for all of the replies folks, very useful information. Are there any reasons why the two have different designs?
Aidan.

The "pigtail" - the cable between the shoe and the motor connection - is fixed to the rocking link in the depot as and when needed. I've done a few hundred of these and always thought it was/is a design error as the connection for the pigtail is always left handed for negative shoes and two left and two right handed for positive. Whoever designed the fitting clearly didn't think of ease of maintenance as they could all easily have been either right or left handed.
All that being said I think both shoes in the pictures are positives because the top one is right handed and the lower one is left handed (so could be negative) but has longer bolts to fit through a positive shoe beam.
All the above applies to 73 stock as I remember and may or may not apply to other stocks with the same shoe gear.
Where are the shoes from, they seem to be too complete to be recovered knocked off shoes?
