Given the recent news about 24hr running on weekends on parts of the Tube network. Why was the Overground completely omitted? Granted, parts of the Overground may have no need for it (GOBLIN) or is impractical (WLL), but I can see the benefits of having a Highbury & Islington/Dalston - New Cross/Crystal Palace/C. Junction service at the very least.

For a start it doesn't run through the centre of London (whereas the others do). The night tube was mainly for London nightlife, mainly the west end, which isn't really served by the overground at all. Additionally it isn't ATO, which is a common factor to most of the night tube lines (all bar the bakerloo) which makes the drivers job easier

It's where all the kool kidz are going! There was a bit of a hoo-haa about Old Street and it's branch being omitted for serving that area. But also, the Overground line would provide useful interchanges with the Jubilee, Northern and Victoria lines. But I take your point about ATOs, but that can't be the main obstacle can it?

Outside of the core section, Network Rail would require access to the sections south of New Cross Gate and where the ELL meets the SLL north of Queens Road Peckham.
However, there is an improvement to the overnight New Years Eve service on the ELL with 6tph between Highbury and Islington and Sydenham with 2tph on the Crystal Palace branch for the first time alongside the 4tph on the West Croydon branch.
I'm sure in the future if a Fri/Sat 24 hour service can be arranged, it'll be those two ELL branches which operate on New Years Eve will be the first.

It would also take a lot of work with the unions to bring it in, would require recruiting a hell of a lot more drivers. In order for drivers to resume having breaks at Dalston instead of nearly all taking place at New Cross Gate, LOROL would have to recruit a lot more drivers, which they're not willing to do. It would mean a hell of a lot more to do 24 hour running, I just don't think they can justify the cost of the extra drivers for running a few more trains, not to mention paying NR for track access etc. It's completely different than the Tube's closed system.
Also I highly doubt the union would be up for it, nor the drivers. We have given up a lot over the last few years, putting Sundays in to the working week, taking away bank holidays etc that we now have pretty much nothing to negotiate with for any future negotiations. You can be sure that 24 hour working and also not running on Boxing Day are our only things we have to hold on to.

Apparently TfL have approached LOROL regarding the operation of night services on the Overground for Friday and Saturday nights. I don't know the timescale or indeed whether this is proposed for the whole of the Overground network. There will be hurdles to overcome obviously.

So does that mean only over LUL owned infrastructure then? - NX/NXG - Daston Junction

So does that mean only over LUL owned infrastructure then? - NX/NXG - Daston Junction I'm not too sure about New Cross. LOROL may have to pay Southeastern to keep New Cross open. On previous overnight NYE services and during the Olympics, they've operated to stations managed by LOROL while paying NR for access to the West Croydon and Crystal Palace branches. I'd speculate they'll go for 6tph as per NYE 2013: 4tph Highbury & Islington to West Croydon 2tph Highbury & Islington to Crystal Palace If NR require the line south of NXG for engineering works or if NR require access to the line around 0300/30 prior to re-opening. 4tph Highbury & Islington to New Cross Gate.
