Can anyone explain why journeys between these two stations are painfully slow - particularly for some time after leaving Clapham Junction? The timetable allows ten minutes between these two stations, which is generous given the relatively short distance.
Is the problem with the timetable itself, the track quality, junctions or something else? Can anything be done to quicken the service between these stops?

Pleased to say the restoration of BEA coach MLL738 is as complete as it can be, now restoring MLL721

Probably line speeds. I'm not familiar with the current track layout in that area, but most lines under and around Clapham Junction had very low speed limits due to curves, junctions, gradients, and the faxt it was mostly freight traffic that used that area.

From Clapham Junction to Ludgate Junction the line speed is 10mph due to the condition of the bridge.

From Wandsworth Road the linespeed is 20mph over the junction then 25mph the rest of the way until it's 10mph on approach to Clapham Junction as Daz has said above.

I think you'll find that the actual journey time from Clapham Junction to Wandsworth Road is closer to 5 mins. In the opposite direction it can be a little longer if there is a wait for the outcoming service (the signal is pulled off quite late for departure from CLJ sometimes). It's unfortunate that the on-train automatic announcement for Clapham Junction is broadcast almost immediately after the speed reduction to 10mph and it then takes another 2 mins to arrive in the station! It's a bit tortuous for drivers too, especially when South West Trains on the adjacent line can go that little bit faster. LOROL did put in a request for a speed increase (even just up to 15mph) but this was firmly declined due to the weak bridge issue as mentioned above, so unfortunately it's unlikely that this will change any time soon.
Although the distance between the stations isn't that great there are a lot of points to cross and the curvature past Stewart's Lane depot adds a bit to the distance that would otherwise be a fair bit shorter "as the crow flies". Mileage wise it actually one of the longest stretches on the entire ELL/SLL between stations and this is compounded by the reduced speeds of 20, 25 and 10mph over this section.
