On the way home this evening I noticed that the Piccadilly line car I was travelling on had new flooring around the luggage space areas to mark contrast:

I've seen this as well. have the grip rails always been yellow around the door area? I know that the foot plate outside the door has been painted yellow as well...

So is the fleet having a "refresh" and if so, is it going on the order in which they were refurbed?
(at least, that is my interpretation of your post)

The fact that it was refurb Train 1 is, I'm sure, coincidence. It just happened to be 'available' (i.e. out of service!) when they wanted to do the work. This is often the case when something new is started, it's just what's available. Going back many years (and a bit off topic - sorry folks!) many of you will remember the "sunshine window" 1938 Stock car 10306. This wasn't specifically chosen to receive the mods, it just happened to be where it was in Acton Works at the time they wanted a car for the mods - in other words, it could been any car at the end of the day.

I've had a look at November's 'Underground News' and it looks as though you're right, reganorak, with regards to Train 1 (the first to be refurbished back in 1996) being a coinicidence. However, the recent work is very minor and so I feel it's neither a refurbishment nor a refresh - it is merely the flooring around the doors. According to TfL, the passenger seats are not due to be replaced by 'Barman' moquette any time soon.
Apparently some cab seat covers have been replaced with the new 'Barman' moquette - I'm not sure whether this is going to be fleet-wide or whether it is just ad-hoc replacements in a similar way to the W&C moquette being seen in some D78 cabs

So it seems these trains still have some life left in them.

So it seems these trains still have some life left in them. Just as well, seeing as the new trains won't arrive for some time!

Units 866+151 (the first refurb BTW). Unit 190 was the first refurb (mid 1996) and entered passenger service coupled to a non-refurb unit.

190 was a "prototype" refurb by Metro Cammell and the production refurbs were nothing like 190. 190 received it's proper (production) refurb later in the programme.
As a prototype refurb 190 ran with suitably modified unit 123.

190 was a "prototype" refurb... Yes, and the first to undergo a refurbishment procedure.
