Once upon a time, it was easy to get to the Victoria Line at King's Cross. From memory you went down from King's Cross mainline to the ticket hall, through the barriers, down an escalator (next to the Piccadilly Line escalator) and, after a short walk, you were on the Victoria Line platforms.
Since the station was rebuilt though, you seem to have to walk about a mile along long passages (turning back on yourself along the way) to get to the platforms. I'm sure that when I last went from King's Cross to Victoria, it took almost as long to get down to the platforms as it did for the journey to Victoria.
Can anyone explain why this is so and, more importantly, is there a quicker way down to the Victoria Line at King's Cross that I'm missing?
Thanks,
Greg

Short route not available while the entrances are being rebuilt.
Once the square is finished the options will return.
In the meantime you can use the Pentonville Road entrance (the old Thameslink entrance) which is a quick way to the Vic.

For now you can still head through the old passages! They are still open (as of last week when I last used them unless it's changed again!) - the ticket hall and barriers you mention are still there as is the short walk. You can either take the single escalator from the Kings Cross concourse down to the northern ticket hall, then walk along the passageway (with WHSmith and Starbucks on the right) to the old ticket hall, or come out the front of Kings Cross then turn left, left and left again round and down the old stairs which have recently been reopened (the stairs used to be the main entrance from the old concourse to the Tube) with people guiding you down there!

Agree with causton - the old route is still there, the signs just direct you to the overly-long passageway, I assume so the station can hold more passengers and not have them crowding up the platforms. You can see the layout here: parkinginstevenage.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/king-cross-upgrade-map1.gif - you can come out of the west end of the Victoria Line platforms as before, or use the new corridor at the east end for a sizeable detour.

The number one rule of the new King's Cross has to be "don't follow the signs". Some of the ridiculous routes they will direct you on waste huge amounts of time. Generally, from the Piccadilly I go up the old escalators then out the stairs onto Euston Road at the front of the BR station. I still habitually reach for my ticket when walking into the Khyber pass, expecting to have to go out the gates then back in again!
