I travelled on LO for the first time in ages last night (having moved to the coast recently), and while squashed in to a packed train two questions entered my mind which I'm sure someone on here will have the answers to: 1. Why do the platform assistants use megaphones to tell passengers to let people off first, move inside the car, etc? With all the noise from people getting on/off, the onboard PA system, etc, it's impossible to hear them. Why don't they use the station PA system as on LU, or don't they have them (or are they just no use?!). For avoidance of doubt, Gospel Oak, Highbury and Islington and Dalston Junction spring to mind. 2. I was on 378232, which for some reason I thought was always on the ELL. That got me thinking, are there any units that only work the ELL or NLL/DC (378/1s excluded obviously)? Or are they regularly interchanged (possibly to keep the AC side of things in working order?)? Just random, pointless thoughts on a slow and uneventful journey...

1. Afaik the megaphones were introduced fairly recently so the technique of having a dispatcher telling passengers what to do might be a trial and if proven successful they may get the LU style wireless things that are connected to that platforms PA system.
2. The only 378 that currently can't swap depots is 378225 which has had its bodyside cameras removed so can only be operated with driver + guard restricting it to the North and West London lines.

I think this is confused even more by the fact that not all of these people are real dispatchers - I've been told by a platform assistant at West Hampstead employed by LOROL, and one on the ELL side of Highbury & Islington employed by STM Security, that they cannot dispatch trains, only yell at passengers manage dwell time. However, I have seen LOROL-employed staff on the NLL at Highbury giving a Station Work Complete signal

Any idea why? Vandalism, perhaps?

On the subject of train despatchers - can anyone here think of a better phrase than "Use all the available doors"? It always bugs me - I use as many doors as I can, but I've never managed to use more than one at a time...

I've always assumed that the passengers who cluster together on the platform, ignoring the full length of the train and all its available doors, are the same people who park their car right next to mine in an otherwise empty car park, so I can't open my door properly.

Would these also be the people who when presented with an empty carriage will choose to sit next to you?

The only place where dispatchers are employed is Willesden Junction, on the NLL no other location has dispatchers. Not sure why 378225 has had the cameras withdrawn, I do not think its vandalism as the camera locations have been plated over by the same shape piece of metal. However I have been told that another unit as also had the cameras withdrawn, cant confirm this though but it came from one of the Conductors I work with. Will try to find out which unit (if any ) this is. However I am off trains until next Wednesday.

Perhaps they took the cameras off another unit to fit them onto 225

I've now taken a picture of 378225 today - and it's had the cameras removed again! Either that, or they have only been added on one side of the train...
