There was fun and games at West Croydon this morning (Thursday 21st March 2013) as the 'On Time' 10.39 to Dalston Junction (but running late) was suddenly announced as leaving from Platform 1 (the bay platform normally only used by the 'long way round' London Bridge services). As the Overground from West Croydon has been a huge success, masses of people moved across from 3 to 1. A few minutes later the train that was destined to be the delayed 10.39 arrived - to terminate on Platform 4 as usual.
At this point the station staff began making frantic announcements that the service would be leaving (late) from Platform 3 and the crowd surged back. After a Victoria service had been let through, the Dalston train emerged from the reversing siding and we were on our way.
West Croydon is within the T area (controlled by Three Bridges ASC if I've got it right) so what was going on behind the scenes to cause the rapid (and spurious) platform changes?

The 1039 to Dalston Junction (9D22) is diagrammed to turn around in the turnback sidings, so it could have been decided to turn around in the bay due to lateness, however it may have been decided later by the signaller that it wasn't practical with other services.

Thanks. Is there enough activity around West Croydon to keep a signaller fully occupied, or would they be handling Gloucester Road Junction, Selhurst Junction, etc?

It's obviously been a while since you've been there Rich. That platform has been extended and now aligns with the track the entire length.

'tis true it has been a while since I've been there. It would make sense in terms of the 10-car project for Southern to re-use that part of the station.

There have been several tweaks to West Croydon in the last few years:-
a)Turnback siding for the Overground, formed from the Up approach to West Croydon between Pitlake Bridge and London Road. The trackbed from the old Wimbledon branch (not used by Tramlink) is now the Up approach over that stretch.
b) Platform 2 absorbed into Platform 3
c) Platform 4 extended
d) Wheelchair ramp formed on Platform 3 just east of the stairs. It passes through a newly-formed gap in the wall between Platforms 3 and 1 and exits into the car park entrance next to the station in London Road to achieve a step-free rise of about 15ft.
e) While the wheelchair ramp was being installed, the buffers area of Platform 1 was re-modelled to give slightly more platform length.
f) The exit from Platform 4 (next to the original 1850s station building, now a car accessories shop) has been upgraded from disabled-only to full public use with ticket barriers and a member of staff on hand. Very useful for the West Croydon tram stop and sort-of OK for the bus station if you are prepared to climb over the barrier that divides Station Road into lanes.
Certain rail stations around London (Seven Sisters, for example) have the carriage door positions painted on the platform to help commuters board faster. No need for that at West Croydon. The commuters on Platform 3 just KNOW where the doors on the 378s will stop and in the morning rush little knots of people form at precise places on the platform. They do this even though there will be one or even two Victoria services through ahead of the Overgound service because they know that their Overground will be SRO even before the train leaves West Croydon. It will remain SRO all the way to Shoreditch High Street.
