Whilst out this evening as I was walking past the Barking flyover I was surprised to hear a D Stock train coming over with a very odd engine motor noise. The noise sort of sounded like that of a 96 stock train and by the pitch changing it sounded as if it was decelerating.
Anyone know the reason for this?

Sounds like the rails have recently been grounded [Rail Grinding]

The rail grinding train was in Dagenham East siding yesterday, so that may be the reason - having been out and about previously?

I was surprised to hear a D Stock train coming over with a very odd engine noise. You are right, a D Stock with an engine is most perculiar.

You wouldn't believe the amount of times I corrected myself from engine to motor when I was thinking about what I was going to say in the post and then I come to posting and still end up writing engine .

I'm sure I've seen references to "door engines" on Underground trains.

You can have an electric engine, but they were supposedly discovered early on to be inefficient compared to an electric motor, and never caught on.

I'm sure I've seen references to "door engines" on Underground trains. You have - but until very recently these were all AIR engines (i.e. pneumatic)... .
