Brian Hardy comments in 'Underground Train File' that by 1949 the 5 cars converted into a mobile instruction unit had been fitted with three types of traction equipment and all the other teaching instruments necessary. Three questions; Which types of traction equipment were these? By 1950 there were still more than three main types in regular use. As new stock was introduced and older stock was withdrawn, presumably the equipment carried on the set was kept up to date - if so what equipments did the set end up with by the end of its life? Are there any pictures of the interior after conversion, or even the exterior near the end of its life? Its seems to have been a very shy beast! Thanks to anyone in advance

I'm sure I've seen an article about these in a magazine that had interior shots. I only wish I could remember where. IIRC each car was fitted out for a particular purpose, i e signaling, traction supply etc. There is a colour photograph of these cars being taken to Neasden for the Underground centenary in 1963. There was also a photograph in an early edition of 'Backtrack' magazine of the cars on the scrap line after they were withdrawn in 1969.

There would have been a fair amount of different equipment. PCM (1938, R stock), Electro Pneumatic (T stock, O/P stock, BWE Circle Stock) and Electro magnetic (Pre-1938 tube, F, H, Q, BTH Circle stock).
There were a fair few types of motors too, would have weighed a ton if all included (and hence unikely!).

I've found the photograph of the interior of one of the cars as a training vehicle. It's in 'Workhorses of the London Underground' page 59. Not a great photograph but it might be worth checking the LTM photographs. I found it quite by accident looking up something else. ;D

This unit was on display at the Underground Centenery at Neasden Depot in 1963. I've just scanned up the programme and mentioned this on another thread, but it states that the cars were the first to have air worked doors (sic.) and it was fitted with "all kinds of rolling stock equipment and a lecture theatre". I can remember there being a set of working doors in the unit with a guards control panel (don't know what stock they were similar to) which I played around with at Neasden on that occasion. On a subsequent visit to White City Training Centre I remember there being a similar set of "practise" doors which may well have been from the unit which had been scrapped by then.

A great pity that not even one car could be saved.

I think the White city doors came from a 1938 car written off at Tooting.

It also had different EP brake systems (self lapping & non self lapping) set up.There were also MA'S & MG's running to show the workings of the auxillary circuits.

Yes by 1963 there was probably a good mix of Motor Generators and Motor Altenators. The MGs were carried by Pre-1938ts (what was left of it!),1938/49ts (P)CO/CP Stock, Q stock. MAs were on the newer stocks, R, A60/62, 1960ts, 1956/59/62.

There were no MGs or MAs on Pre-1938 Tube Stock (Standard Stock) or Q Stock. I am sure the 1962 Tube Stock was the first tube stock to have MAs but this would need checking.

Learnt something new today! I'd have guessed that the 1960ts had MAs. Having said that I forgot the 1959 stock had MGs, hence the postion of the stabling light differed from the 1962 stock.

1960TS had MAs, 6KW 220V, 850 Hz, pretty much the same set-up that was used on 62TS
