A Travel Safe staff member borded a train on the way to Richmond today, common enough, nothing new there. He got to the end of the train and seemed to "scan" the carriage number printed high up next to the dot matrix display by pressing his mobile phone against it. What on earth? How could a mobile phone, (perhaps a camera phone?) read the carriage number when pressed against it and why would he want this anyway? Surely if anything he might like to record the train unit number he was on not the carriage number?
Very odd indeed, certainly confused the passengers.

All trains on London overground and all stations have a bar code type of system linked to the phones. It used by both LO and STM for knowing where the Secruity Staff and Travel safe Officers are, If a incident was to take place they would know that staff were either in the vacinity or not.

I haven't seen them do that on the ELL inside the carriage but they do tap their devices on little magnetic buttons which are placed at different areas on platforms, such as on the side of a billboard.
