First off I think it's excellent that it says which doors will be opening at the next station and if the station has step free access.
Why do only some of them say the 'exit for' part?

Indeed, the Victoria line is the only line to state which side the doors open; this is particularly achievable as the Victoria line is a simple design whereas other lines will have stations with more than one platform for a given direction of travel. The 'exits' are only announced when the system is in 'tourist' mode. You'll find they are omitted (along with the step-free access messages) during commuter peak times. Hope this helps!

Yes it does help, but I think it's a bit odd when every other line has the full announcements on all the time. When you say peak times do you mean before 9:30am and 4-6pm Monday to Friday?

S stock and D stock also only do the tourist announcements off peak, although on S stock Wembley Stadium is always announced since there are events at all sorts of times.

I've been on the District many a time during rush hour and upon arrival at South Kensington I'm told to "Alight here for the museums and the Royal Albert Hall". I believe it is really up to the driver to choose whether they want to play the tourist announcements, and they often simply choose the off peak anouncements out of habit.

Unfortunately your belief is incorrect.
Drivers have no choice over which type of announcement is played on D stock - the system has some sort of built in clock and thus it only does the tourist stuff between the peaks (roughly 0930 - 1630).

*I think* by contrast, the Piccadilly line doesn't have a built in clock but rather it is up to the driver upon route selection to specify whether it is 'tourist' or 'commuter'.
This applies to the Jubilee and Northern lines which have older on-board systems in place. The Northern line in particular has limited memory capacity so it is difficult to alter announcements. As it is, it only has one 'alight/exit' which is Moorfields Eye Hospital at Old Street.

I'm not sure about the Central line in terms of memory capacity but I have heard that it is fairly difficult to update it due to software/hardware issues, especially since the DVA was installed during the early '90s!

It has had one major update in that time, around 2003. I think there may have been another minor one after that, altering Bank to say "DLR" instead of "Docklands Light Railway". The quality of recording for the updated Bank is a lot better, which is quite noticeable.

Does anybody know if the 'this station has step free access' bit will be added on the DVA at green park?
