We went from Amersham to Stratford on Friday for the Olympics. On the return leg my wife and I both used the loos at Baker Street. The Gents loo is inside the ticket barrier, but the ladies is outside, so my wife had to touch out and in again. My journey cost £7.40, but hers cost £10.00 as going to the loo in zone 1 ups the journey cost by £2.60.

That's a bit more than the usual "spend a penny"!
No station staff to let her out and back in?

No, but didn't look too hard, as matters pressing!
23:09 Touch in, Baker Street £2.00 £17.31 22:37 - 23:07 Stratford to Baker Street £2.60 £19.31 23:07 Touch out, Baker Street £1.20 £19.31
Might contact TFL and ask for a peefund, sorry, refund.

Been caught out the same way when caught short at Harrow.
At least at Baker Street there is the option of an OSI to Marylebone

Didn't you get a free travelcard with your Olympic ticket?

It depends on when you got your Olympic and Paralympic tickets. If print-at-home then no.

Yes, last minute deal, tickets printed at home.
Good idea about Marylebone, as long as you use the toilets at Baker St or wait until you board the Chiltern train, as I'm fairly sure you have to pay to use the Marylebone facilities. Although probably less than £2.60.

I think there is also an OSI between the gatelines at Baker Street. So you could have touched in on the bakerloo line gateline.
Although surely much simpler just to ask the staff to let you out to spend a penny?

I thought you could use the printout of your ticket confirmation to travel for free on LU services?
And isn't that a maximum charge? You're lucky the Olympics are on otherwise it would have been a much larger amount... I think it is?

That was my first thought but it is not shown on the OSI list linked elsewhere in this forum.

It reminds me of what Bill Pertwee (the ARP warden in Dad's Army) said once in an interview about Kenneth Williams and that he would not allow any of his visiting guests to use his lavortory in his flat and that you had to go down to the Baker Street station WC. ;D

Perhaps the main doors to toilets could be fitted with an oyster reader/lock? That way if someone has to exit a station a timed OSI could be setup to loos outside the gateline. Also it would provide some kind of record of who used a toilet if there was vandalism. Not perfect, but would avoid charges like that above. Avoid the awkward process of fishing around in ones pocket for the correct silver to pay a 'toilet warden' who doesnt speak english to let you in...

I don't see where this becomes a discrimination issue.
You could both have been on the other side of the barrier when it would be the man having to go through it.
I also don't understand why you were changing at Baker Street. One would change any of Stratford-Finchley Road-Amersham, Stratford-Bond Street-Finchley Road-Amersham or Stratford-Mile End-Liverpool Street (or any station up to Great Portland Street)-Amersham.

Hardly gender discrimination..... she could have slipped into the Gents; no law against doing that...
The reason there are separate facilities is to pander to female paranoia that all men are potential perverts/rapists.
If they want separatism in the privacy of a cubicle then fine but that comes at a cost, but plenty of women use the gents to avoid queueing. She should have.

And she would have slipped into the Gents if we'd realised/thought about the cost of touching out and in again for a two minute period.
And yes, took first train out of Liverpool St in order to use the facilities at Baker St.
Anyway, TFL have kindly agreed to a peefund of the £2.60, so that's, er, a relief then.

Good to see you worked it all out well in the end.

BTW, when I paid homage to the A-stock at the end of July by doing train 442 (I think) Aldgate-Chesham after seeing it on it's way to Uxbridge earlier I resisted the temptation to take it to Aldgate initially and even though I starved myself of liquids after seeing it earlier I went to Liverpool Street on the S-stock first to "clear the path" and make sure I was not caught short.
That said, one thing I sometimes do at mainline stations to avoid absurd toilet charges is to nip onto a train to use the toilet..... but check that it isn't due to leave when you do that!

Is this a TFL's version of a Supermarket Bogoff! Surely you have a case under the sexual discrimination act you; of course you will be accused of having taken the P!!!! ;D
