The Victoria line was the first line to have automatic gates, as this great poster from 1972 clarifies: www.flickr.com/photos/36844288@N00/5492014261/When the did the '4 door' and tripod gates get replaced by the conventional UTS ones (as introduced in the 1980s)? I know that the vast majority of Zone 1 stations had automatic gates by 1990 but did the Victoria line retain its original style of gates for longer?

Experiments with automatic gates occured much earlier at, i think, at stamford Brook because it was close to the signal department at Earls Court. These early gates and the Victoria Line were based on edmonson size tickets (Including season tickets). Liverpool St also had a early computerised ticket machine also edmonson sized. The first credit size type tickets were first shown by Westinghouse at a Technology college at Stepney Green next to the Mile End hospital..

They were replaced around the same time (if not before) as the other zone one stations were getting their UTS gates, although I think they had fallen into disuse for a while before replacement. The AFC gates on the Vic accepted the smaller, old style tickets and were not compatible with the credit card sized tickets (still in use today) produced by the UTS system, which was rolled out from the mid 80's. Based on this, I would suspect that the original gates were out of use by 1985/6 at the latest.

The pilot station for the new style UTS tickets was Vauxhall and a new ticket office was created opposite the old one with new gates were installed.
Must have worked because every station got the gates in the end.
