Hello all I am a big fan of the LTM moquette cushions. I have 4 of them, London Overground class 378 1992 stock (pre refresh) 1992 stock (refreshed) S Stock I also have a D78 refurbished oyster card holder. What I wanted to know about them was, are they actual recycled tube seats, or are they left overs, of the material or are they replicas. The reason I ask is because i doubt that TFl would be Recycling S Stock seats all ready and the 1992 stock (Pre refresh) looks in to good condition to be recycled. I also doubt that the 1992 stock (pre refresh) would be left overs because it was made over 20 years ago . So what are they? Any ideas??

I think it is splendid that you take an interest in such designs and well done. I do like the class 378 and the 1992 stock refurb moquette. The problem in my view, which I think also affects the retail sales by the LT Museum, with today's moquette it is often not as distinctive, not widely recognised or having longevity in service as former London Transport moquettes. For example there was the brown/black/yellow/brown moquette, used on the Distict D stock, Jubilee 1983 stock, Metro and Titan buses as well as being used sometimes on LT furniture. Then there was the blue and green moquette used on the 1973 Piccadilly Line stock, Bakerloo and Northern Line 1956/1959 stocks, Circle, District and H&C Lines C stock as well as LS, DM, DMS and SMS and refurb RF buses. And there was black/red/grey used on the Met's A stock, the Central's 1962 TS and the Victoria Line 1967 TS, 1972 TS and some District R stocks. And there was the green and red moquette used on the 1938, CO/CP and R stocks. Then to add, there is the orignal and lovely Routemaster bus moquette. Also the modern moquettes are not as hard wearing as the the original LT spec. The same goes for the cheaply made enamel signs on the Underground nowadays that lack the sharpness, richness of colour and enamel depth of old. This is my personal favorite from the LPTB era.

I completley agree with you, I dont know half of the moquettes they are selling, never seen them before. I have been after a 2009 stock one for ages and got one on reserve, but when it will come in I dont know. One person said that the 1930s Northern line moquette was used on a bus. They are having all the rubbish moquettes like these being left over, and all the good ones being sold. Its really unfair and sureley they want to sell things, not keep them. They should get more modern ones and less old ones. Personally I really hate the old District moquette, it looks very tacky and i wouldnt buy it.

Hi Vic09,
I am with you there as well regarding not knowing the moquettes. It would be good if there was fewer good quality London designs, used on TfL.
I was thinking, looking at the seating on the 09s that it would be better if they had the leather trim, to keep the tops of the seat backs looking clean, which was standard on Underground stock and has been put back on the Bakerloo's refurb 72 stock.
The old D stock moquette is very much in your face and even a "non transport" person could not mistake it. ;D
I hope you get your Vic Line 09 moquette soon.

Thank you very much route master, and you are right, its to famous, everybody knows that it is the Tube and they could not really get rid of it. And i think that leather trim would be a very good idea, would keep them in goo condition for much longer .

I have heard that the same company has produced all of the LT moquette's. Furthermore that that company is still in business and can produce any LT pattern to order. It is likely that some obsolete patterns may still be held in stock and this is a means of disposing of that stock. The more modern patterns used may be from offcuts or 'seconds'. There was a lot of RT bus moquette left over when they were withdrawn and this was sold onto British Rail Southern Region who made good use of it on their EMU's and some of it found its way onto other regions, I remember travelling on a DMU in East Anglia in the 80's that used it.

Slightly off the point but at one point in the 70s BR took some LT moquette (RT bus type and District line red and green) to trim a couple of EPB coaches. Shortage of their own Trojan I believe. There's a good picture of one of these coaches in "Slam Doors on the Southern". I remember being quite surprised stepping into the RT atmosphere on a train!

London Transport Museum commissioned new runs of previous designs.
Theres an artical on it in SAGA magazine - available in all good NHS waiting rooms two years after publication.

Are there any links to seeing this on the refurbed RF's? And was this moquette applied to the RF's that London Country inherited from LT in 1970?

I don't recall this moquette being on any RFs but it was used, along with the grey interior on a few new RMLs at Hanwell garage on route 207 in the late '60s - they looked awful!

The blue/green moquette was also used on the RCLs refurbished for routes such as the 149 and 253 in the 80s.
