I've been trying to find out which letters correspond to which payment method online to no avail.
The only three letter codes I'm sure of are:
M - Cash X - Credit or Debit Card W - Rail Travel Voucher
Any others?

This is dredging the depths of my memory.....
I think W = Warrant, F = Forces Warrant, D = Refund Voucher, Q for cheque.
Of those I think only MQX are regularly used these days - however, I've not booked an NR ticket in nearly 15 years, so I welcome correction.

Thanks for correcting me on W which makes a lot more sense. Apparently LUL stations also accept NR vouchers and add them as warrants.
Also found some old rail receipts which show card transactions as C instead of X.

Yes, I concur with the above... Rail Travel Warrants aren't used that frequently these days, as I think there is a huge fee to pay on top of the ticket price!

Once a Company has an account, each warrant appears to cost no more than 30p on top of the fare (60p for season ticket warrants): www.atocrailwarrants.org/What fees are payable when using a Rail Warrant Account? The current annual fee per account is £275 (£100 for registered charities). This is payable in advance by direct debit. There is also a charge of £15 for each warrant book issued subject to a maximum charge of £3,750 in one year (1st April to 31st March). How many warrants are in a book? There are 50 warrants in each ordinary rail warrant book and 25 in each season ticket rail warrant book.

Warrants are used as delay refunds, too.
