I was reading in another thread that there are evening peak restrictions on the London Underground. Has this always been the case? I seem to remember the only restriction was if you travelled before 0930.

I believe it applies to oyster PAYG use only...

Before 09:30 you have to have an Anytime travelcard and Oyster PAYG cards charge peak rates. 09:30 - 16:30 Off-Peak travelcard is fine, PAYG cards charge off-peak. 16:30 - 19:30 Off-Peak travelcard is still fine (and you can still use your Oyster with it only charging to the off-peak cap), but PAYG Oyster *singles* will charge peak rates (unless you are travelling into zone 1 from outer London) 19:30 - end of day Off-Peak travelcard fine, PAYG cards charge off-peak.

Well that's good news. I have always believed that the 09:30-16:30 off peak was 09:30-16:00 and have rushed out the door to beat 16:00.
Not sure what you mean by your 16:30-19:30 PAYG charging peak rate (agreed) unless travelling to zone 1 from outer London. If I leave Hornchurch at 16:00 to go to Liverpool Street, I usually walk from Whitechapel. Zone 2 and earlier time save money. Are you saying I can leave at 17:00 and go to LS for same price? Sorry for being thick.

I had a chat about being charged off-peak Oyster PAYG after touching in at Stratford at 1604 on a weekday. It appears that they continue to charge off-peak until 1606. I suspect this is due to gatelines not sharing the same times, so that pax don't get charged the 'wrong' fare for tapping in at 1559 when the gate says 1601. Evening peak fares weren't charged until Oyster PAYG was introduced. However there are no longer evening peak fares into Zone 1 between 1600-1900 if travelling on TfL services. On NR, they had no evening fare restrictions until PAYG was introduced in 2010. Cheap Day Returns were axed in favour of Oyster PAYG. A shame as they were cheaper than PAYG and could be used in the evening peak.

I thought this depended on the operator (before Oyster), First Capital Connect being an example of one that charged an evening peak?

Oyster PAYG also charges off-peak for singles if touched in before 0630.

Sorry for being thick. Apologies... it's 16:00-19:00  And yes, I think, as you're using TfL services (i.e. not NXEA or another NR ToC) and going into zone 1...

Of course, this was from St. Pancras Intl to stations up to Bedford only if I recall to ease on overcrowding.
