Hi all,
Does anyone know what happened at Royal Vic DLR last night?
Woke up to a LOT of noise around 3.00am. I see a digger type dump truck by the stairs at the exit and lots of police!
The ticket machine has now gone!
I can only assume they was an attempted robbery of the machine or even successful!
Police was still there at 8am this morning!

It's possible that you'll never really know until the papers come out - people here who might be more in the know might also be obliged to keep schtum. Does indeed sound likely, though, that they stole the ticket machine! Wow.
(Makes me wonder, how many transactions are cash nowadays anyway? Idle wondering... please don't waste your time answering!)

I've not quickly found any figures solely related to transport, but blogs.creditcards.com/2008/04/britons-decreasing-reliance-on-credit-cards.php says that cash accounted for 60% of transactions in 2007. However www.themoneystop.co.uk/042010/cards-set-to-replace-cash-transactions.html quotes a 2010 report from the same source (the Payments Council, an organisation I didn't know existed) as saying that less than 50% of transactions will be made by cash by 2015. It doesn't give current figures in the news article (I've not bothered to read the report) Cash transactions, as might be expected, are not evenly spread across all payments though - it's much more used for low-value transactions than other methods, and much less so for high value ones. It doesn't give figures for what counts as high or low value, but I'd guess transport (excluding season tickets) will be low value transactions. |
