Saw the ex IOW Standard Tube Stock in its faded Network South East colours on a low loader ready to leave Acton today. Has it gone for scrap or restoration?

Sadly the two ex IOW Standard motor cars have gone for scrap. An attempt at preservation was made too late, and probably would have failed in any case due to the asbestos content of the cars. One trailer (7281?) remains at Acton, it's future uncertain, but there may be an 11th hour rescue attempt. It requires more than just a few enthusiastic people to secure it though. If I could, I would give it a home immediately.

Is there only one trailer left at Acton? What happened to the personel carriers?

Unless anything has followed 2 and 7 to Eastleigh, there should still be one 1923 CL trailer, one 1931 PC and two Pilot Motors at Acton - I will have a check as soon as I can in the next day or two and report back. Reganorak, News at Ten ......... ;D ;D ;D

Ha ha, thanks. So basically a four car train then. I wonder what will happen to these. It appears that the set in Acton will never run again so I fear the worst for these.

Unless a miracle happens, which is highly unlikely judging from their condition, you're spot on!

Why exactly Acton chose the two pilot DM's for the Heritage project over the two ex NSE DM's is a mystery to me, as they were in full running order at the time, and required far less work to return them to their original configuration. It would appear, however, that the cars (including the PC's, trailer and the other two pilot cars) are / were owned by LUL, not the Museum Depot. While we can only hope that the 4 car set within the works will at some point get the restoration work they deserve, I have to say that attempts to secure any of the other cars for preservation have been thwarted by red tape and, sadly, a lack of interest from those who could have provided suitable storage facilities at no cost. Having been involved in one of those attempts, I have been left dismayed at the "someone else will do it" attitude expressed by those who were originally all for getting stuck in. Soon there will be only 4 cars left in the whole country. Sad indeed.

The decision to save the two Pilot Motors could have been due to thier overall condition. They were complete and, in theory, operational when they were earmarked and thier framework hadn't been subject to sea air for twenty three years. I can't imagine that the frames of the ex-IOW cars were up to much. What is comforting is that, each year I have been to the Acton Museum Open Weekends, some progress seems to have been made on at least one of the cars. They are secure and under cover. For that, at least, we should be thankful! RIP 2 and 7. The sight of you running under your own power from Fratton to Wimbledon in 1990 will live with me forever!

And me too! A wonderful sight, especially of the train sitting in Virginia Water station.
Bet it wouldn't happen today - if indeed it were possible.

Bruce has mentioned this on his blog "The appearance of two old standard stock tube cars for dismantling is a bit sad. These two cars are in NSE livery, having been brought back to the mainland from the Isle of Wight some 20 years ago. These ancient vehicles were converted from standard LuL cars at Eastleigh Works in the 1960s so they have a connection with the Works that goes back a long way. Parts from these two cars will be used to create a working train of standard stock for London Underground so its not all bad news." Good to see that a working train is still actively on the agenda. OK so the scrapping of the "surplus" standard stock cars at Acton has begun. Despite all the hoops and hurdles, not to mention fund raising and general logistics involved, I am prepared to have one last attempt at securing one or two for preservation. I may be able to find a home for them long term. Anyone care to join me???

Just wish I could. Once theyre gone, theyre gone forever. There are still 9 carriages, aren't there? Or are the remaining 5 not given the time of day the ones they are starting on now... Why can't there be more publicity! Railway mags, VCT, a letter to the Mayor/Val Shorecross? Theres room elsewhere for individual carriages... lots of it.

There's plenty of covered and open storage space where I keep my bus fleet at New Romney, but of course at a cost.
