This may perhaps be a question for the more experienced member, but you never know.......... The G, K ,L and M stock motors had two types of bogie. The A2 Motor bogie in the leading position and the K2 bogie in the trailing position. The K2 trailing bogie was so good it was fitted to B stock trailers (converted from motors to run with G/K motors) and then fitted to the Met's saloon Circle stock and the Dreadnought fleet. When the Q38 stock was built, they had different bogies but (the 25 DM) had the same electro-magnetic equipment as the C/D/E/G/K/L/M stock (15 even receiving EM sets from C/D/E stock). My question is........did the Q38 driving motors have one motor per bogie like the O/P and R stock (for which the suspension was offset towards the powered axel) or did the leading bogie house both motors like the other Q (converted) driving motors? It was bugging me yesterday..... Cheers Metman

My "bible" - Steam to Silver implies that the 25 Q stock motor cars had the same bogies as the O and P stock - thus one motor per bogie; but it probably needs Tubeprune to confirm

I agree - from the same source ('Steam to Silver' is a sort of bible to me too)!! It seems that even the R stock continued the same practice so it's unlikely the Qs would have been differnet from went before AND went after.
The book regularly appears on eBay at reasonable prices if you are prepared to wait. Author is J. Graeme Bruce.

Yes 100&30 sir, I can confirm. They had to have the motors on one axle only because they had offset centres to provide a "maximum traction" effect. I doubt you can get a WT54 motor on the other axle. There wouldn't be room.

Tubeprune; Thanks - the offset transom bogies were inferred in Steam to Silver, but not positively confirmed and although I recall travelling on them (after I started work!) I didn't recall absolutely for certain.

Cheers lads, thats what I thought! There must have been a little alteration work to convert the C/D/E stock equipment to make it suitable for the 15 Q38 DMs!

I thought the C/D/E stock never worked with the Q38, only the G/K/L/M/N stock, which all became Q stock. Cheers lads, thats what I thought! There must have been a little alteration work to convert the C/D/E stock equipment to make it suitable for the 15 Q38 DMs!

You're right the C/D/E stock never worked with the Q38 or the Q converted stock but 15 of the 25 new Q38 stock motors recieved electro-magnetic equipment from 15 C-E stock motor cars that were converted to trailers in 1938. The G/K/L/M motor cars were converted to work with the new Q38 trailers and a year later the Q38 motors. The L/M/N trailers worked with the C/D/E stock motors (and trailers) and became H stock (after the B stock was scrapped). It was only when Q38 trailers started to become R38 motors in 1950 did the L/M/N trailers become Q31-35 stock (and in the mid 50s the L/M motors became trailers too!) replace them.
