Hi everyone,
In case anyone is interested: seen passing through Watford Junction yesterday morning at 0750 - 378255 and another (possibly 256 but not confirmed) heading south. 378255 also seen today coming off Willesden TMD probably continuing its' 1000 mile + trials (or whatever it needs to do) before acceptance.
Regards
Martin

Likely to be 378214, as that is the unit that's been doing the testing with 255.
256 is still at Derby

Just out of interest, what makes it drive nicely? (or for that matter, what makes it bad?)

Every unit has different characteristics, depending on the age of it. In terms of the one mentioned, rheostatic braking is much more responsive than older units, with a firmer 'bite' and quicker to react. Most of the other units I'd use brake step one coming into Canada Water on the up, and have to then go into step two halfway down the platform. With that unit I had to release the brakes halfway along the platform! Also quick acceleration is a rather nice thing to have as well. There is one particular unit that most of the drivers know that is the complete opposite. You get used to them after a couple of stops.

They all accelerate in the same way. In fact power is increased to the motors to maintain acceleration when loaded!

378257 has arrived at Crewe for ac testing and mileage accumulation. I am not aware that any 'partner' has been dispatched north to accompany it.

Yes power is increased in the motors whilst accelerating and braking so that there is no noticable differrence between driving an empty and a full unit. Like I said earlier, due to age and wear and tear of the different traction motors on each unit, you do find that some accelerate and brake better or worse than other units. Bizarrely there is even a difference in some units when driving from the other cab.

That'd be for route learning for stock transfer between NXG and Willesden depots.

378s 255/6/7 are all in active service and there is now a very clear division in the New Cross and Willesden fleets. 201 - 232 are Willesden units, 233 / 4, 255 / 6 / 7 along with DC units 135 - 154 are New Cross Gate sets. I am surprised that 32 units are at Willesden, only 25 at NXG. Will a couple of units be moved 'south' when Clapham via Peckham opens, or is 25 sets sufficient for the the East London and South London Lines operations? Any of our drivers have the details of the final stock requirements?

Since the new timetable in December '11, 21 units are currently required to run a full service on the East London Line. This includes two units for the weekday morning "PIXC Busters", they sit spare in the depot until the evening once the morning rush is over. I'd imagine we'd need four units for the SLL, so that would leave 2 units spare or for maintenance. This is as long as there still will be four trains per hour to all destinations.

I'd imagine we'd need four units for the SLL, This is as long as there still will be four trains per hour to all destinations. That would require the round trip from Dalston to CJ and back to be done within an hour - the TfL site says the one way trip will take 40 minutes, which means you'll need six units to run four trains an hour.

A software upgrade is currently being undertaken across the 378 fleet. The door close button will now be almost completely inoperative for customers. This is due to many incidents in which customers have pressed the close door button, either on purpose or by accidentally leaning on it, and making the doors close on alighting passengers. Also, before the doors would try to close 5 times if there was an obstruction, this is being reduced to two before it cuts out and remains open. The close door button will then only be activated in this situation.
