Not 100% sure where this belongs, but has a middle cab ever been the leading cab in service? And are there any pics of it?

As MRFS has said, it's a bit of a wide question but on the following stocks this is what I know.
1967 stock: Some were double ended and therefore yes, when they were swapped round from time to time. The non equipped ones - never as they were a mix of 1967 and 1972mkI cars and were not fitted with ATO equipment. 1972 stock: On their days on the Northern yes, they were frequently used, and the four car units were built to be about to couple from the either end to the 3 car set which only have a cab at one end. Now on the Bakerloo, the middle cabs are fixed and with no OPO equipment they would not be used in service. 1973 stock: The middle cabs are all opperational and do see service. 1992 stock: It is uncommon to see middle cabs on the Central Line but those that are seen a mixture of cabs which are functioning and those that have been robbed for spare parts (even drivers seats). There is a thread on the Central Line page re this point. 1995/6 stock: Do not have middle cabs 2009 stock: Do not have middle cabs A60/62 stock: Red painted car ends in the middle of trains can be used in passenger service and are, but those which white/blue fronts do not have the door buttons and other equipment for OPO and are not used in service. They can be seen on turning trips to Watford/Rickmansworth on occasion and in this case the driver can drive the unit from this end, without passengers of course. C69/77 stock: All middle cabs are usable and are used in service when not coupled in the middle of trains. D78 stock: See 1973 stock response.
Hope this helps.

I am pretty sure only fully red cabs will lead a passenger train. Some 'non-red' middle cabs are capable of being used out on the line, but are likely to be missing the level of safety/communication equipment required for a passenger service.
However on NR rails the agreement between LU and NR is that a red front is displayed (as a dispensation for the all yellow normally required). I think the red/white cab in that picture will be to satisfy the requirement if that cab was to lead a stock move...

Yes that sounds right. The non red cabs don't tend to have a number of features such as door controls, connect radio equipment etc and cannot be used to lead a passenger service. The red fronts on the 72s are for NR use, but still not in pax service.

I left the S stock out deliberately Because it's basically subsurface gauge 09 stock?
