I've always wondered, why are there stations in more than one fare zone on the Tube, DLR and LO network? I've also wondered why some lines have more than others. I.e. the Central Line has just 2, and the Met has just 1. But, the DLR has 7. Thanks

It's to avoid having unreasonably high fares for relatively short journeys - for example Gloucester Rd to High Street Ken via earls Court and west Ken to west Brompton via earls Court are both single-zone fares.

How's this for an explanation?
There are 3 stations, A, B & C
If B is in 2 x different fare zones, passengers from both A & C can both access it without cossing into a second zone, whereas if B were only in the same zone as either A or C, a fare for using two different zones would be charged from the other one of the 2 stations.
SEEMples! This is something that has actually been thought out properly and designed to help the travelling public!!!!!!! (Gosh)

Although I believe some stations that were previously in two zones were subsequently moved into one.

Some of them are of limited use though, aren't they? I can't imagine many people getting much benefit from travelling from Shoreditch High Street to Hoxton. Hoxton might as well just be Zone 2.

Shoreditch HS was zoned the way it was for the opposite reason though - the old Shoreditch was Zone 2, but to avoid the loss of fare revenue from people travelling from South London to the City, the operators insisted that SHS be a Zone 1 station.

But Shoreditch HS isn't a double fare zone station. Hoxton, on the other hand, is, and for no good reason from what I can see.

There was an arrangement where ELL customers from Dalston to Wapping could travel to any Zone 2 station on Oyster PAYG between those stations and only pay the Z2 fare as long as they didn't use SHS.
Yet I think it's now a Z1-2 single fare from Dalston to Wapping now?
