Something that really springs to mind between the two stocks here is that, despite the 72's only being one year older, they seem to feel as if they are ALOT older than the 73's, which are definitely in much better condition and smoother. Why is this?
I wouldve thought that the 73's are more intensively used due to the nature of the picc line in comparison to the simple bakerloo line!

Two points really, the 1972 stock is based on the 1967 stock, but with 7 cars and originally crew operated. The design therefore dates from about 1964ish. The 72ts was ordered in a hurry so the design was coppied, without cab doors and all.
The 1973 stock was designed later, and importantly refurbed later. The design for the refurb was taken from the proposed former Jubilee Line 1983 Stock but never used. The 1973 was purpose built for Heathrow, and to fit within the entire platforms to enable later OPO conversion.

regarding the refurbs why did the 73s lose the traverse seating but 72s did not? Cost - 72 TS refurb retained existing seat framing and the existing layout , they didn't even do end windows on 72's even though they did them on C stock refurb which was in work at the same time. Equipment under seats makes changing the arrangement difficult and expensive. 73TS refurb had the biggest budget of all the refurbs also If I remember rightly 73TS didn't have any pneumatics under transverse seats whereas 72TS does. Having said that , I'm not sure what's under a 72 's transverse seats , but If I hazard a guess its probably at a Batteries CONIC and a COM:COS need to see the can rail markings

true why didnt they have windows installed either! even the doors on the 72s seem alot more "slammy" then the 73s, were the 73 doors smooth before refurb?
