Do LUL staff have the right to refuse to work on Sundays like I believe is the case with the TOCs? Everyone has the right to take unpaid time off to attend a religious ceremony unless those rules have changed in the last couple of years. AFAIK that is not ingrained in any legal right. Companies have the legal obligation not to discriminate on the grounds of religion but can refuse upaid elave to attend a religious ceremony as long as the policy isn't discriminatory. Station staff don't have a mafia. Staff who are rostered work the set number of hours listed in their duties, although change overs between individuals do occur. Reserve, or cover staff, have their hours calculated over a rolling 12 week period and if they work more hours than they should they receive the extra hours as payment, less hours than their contract and they must make them up in the next 12 week period.

Stig,
A few years back didnt they do a mafia experiment on the stations side, at your old group on the black line? Apparently it didnt work out, because most staff, predictably, picked earlies.

Is there any reason why earlies are preferred? I can't think of much wose than getting up at 3 AM and either driving or waiting for a night bus. Some staff I believe live as far away from London as Swindon and this would likely involve having to get up even earlier.

On lates, I always found I was just sitting round waiting for time, besides which, anything after 10pm is fairly alien to me anyway. Book on at 0415, book off at 1145. Perfect! The rest of the day to do whatever you want.

I too would prefer earlies, they would be tiring, but you could get into a routine, as you would with lates or nights. What is the problem is the constant changing of shifts.
Yes, on earlies, you would have time to socialise with your friends etc. Agree with SE13, with lates, your sitting round. Handy for shopping/exercise etc, but not as socially advantageous as earlies.

Some people live farther away than Swindon. Theres a guy in Harrow Group who lives in Birmingham. Comes down for a long weekend each week and works as many hours as there are going so I understand.

Long distance commuting, there is a SS on the brown line that commutes daily from Grantham. It's possible for a late or night turn but he needs to drive to Peterborough if he does an early turn or @ weekends.
What is fairly common on stations are staff who prefer to work nights. I have worked on 2 groups where reserve staff loved to do the nights. In my current group I didn't work a night for about a year because a couple of reserves did them constantly.
Personally I much prefer Early turns in the summer and late turns in the winter.
