How strange is is? Yesterday I was browsing for a new torch and having received a Screwfix catalogue in the post and having been a customer in the past, I went to their site and had a look around. Didn't buy anything. Today - I'm sure in the merest of coincidences - I notice that the advertising banner at the top of the page on this venerable site is showing me the EXACT torches I was looking at from the Screwfix site! Obviously, this could be coincidence or is it tracking cookie advertising which I thought was 'illegal'? Not that I'm particularly bothered, it's just that, when the wife's out, I look at 'things' I probably shouldn't at my age and I was wondering if those sites will pop up advertising their wares to me? Wouldn't want the wife to think I was considering buying a Take That CD

It's no coincidence. I'm getting the same from some sites after looking at NAD DVD players. I think the source of the banners come from my eBay browsing...............
Take that back about Take That. Their latest album *Progress* is one of the best albums I've heard for a long time by Robbie and his new back-up singers. Apart from the last two softer tracks *Progress* is a sh1t blistering set-the-volume-to-11 mega blast - *Happy Now* is just sooooooooooooo *amazingly* good...............BUY!!!

If you've been looking at naughty things, it won't appear in the banner as it'll breach the Google Ads T & C. Though I would advise clearing your browsing history.
There's an odd one slips through the net, always unrelated to browsing history (I wasn't looking for breast enhancement any time recently, and that one sprung up)
If anything that shouldn't be there appears, just take a screenie and alert any of the team, there is a complaints procedure we can follow.
The general rule of thumb for the forum is that if you wouldn't want your 13 year old daughter (or son) reading it or seeing it, it isn't suitable for here.

The general rule of thumb for the forum is that if you wouldn't want your 13 year old daughter (or son) reading it or seeing it, it isn't suitable for here. I've had the breast enhancement one before and I, without doubt, haven't been looking at female breasts. I seem to get a lot of weight loss ones too, I suppose from perusing restaurant menus, in fact, at the moment I've got Weight Watchers. Thinking about it, if the ads are from Google, I use them to host my email, rss feeds, etc. so they probably using all the information about you to target their ads. Not a particularly comforting thought, but presumably why they do it. Still doesn't explain the breasts though! Facebook is using these techniques more and more, using your browsing history to target ads - you can see that it scans other sites when you get the Facebook 'like' thingy on different sites - it knows it's you and it knows you're on that site. A wise saying for tech stuff: If it's free, you're the product, not the consumer. Scary stuff.

Another one I often get at the top is for the tummy tuck! Ok, I've got a bit of an overhang at the top of the trousers, but nothing that would need surgery, nor would I look for it! And why on earth would I want larger breasts.... The man boobs are large enough thank-you google!
So unless the wife has been sneaking on and looking at these options, they simply can't be cookies.
For reference, it would currently seem that I'm trying to set my own forum up having previously been looking for football tickets!

Works the same for me, visited play.com and now I've got ads up the top for the very things I had looked at! Talk about telling you to actually go and buy it, not just look!

I've just noticed at the bottom there is marked > "Click Here To Make This Board Ad-Free" Will this affect anything else if I click on it?

That is actually for donating $1.00/10,000 page views to remove ads.

You can't blame them for trying, and it is all blooming clever when you think about it (ok maybe it's only me that thinks it ;D ), and jolly good business sense.
Of course, that's excluding the one I'm looking at now, which is basically telling me to poke whoever my current internet provider is as they are no good for me, and plump for their broadband service. Trouble is, the ad is from my current broadband provider ;D

Trouble is, the ad is from my current broadband provider ;D Oh, that's my favourite type of stupid advertising... it is similar to when you Google for something, get some website as a top result and right next to it get the advertising for that same website.

Interesting that proboards is showing the Plusnet ad which has been flooding TV channels in recent weeks. I wonder why it doesn't use its own name because Plusnet is owned by BT ! I hate ads at the best of times but I really hate internet ads, if I want to buy something I will search for it, shoving ads in my eyeline 24/7 won't make me buy any of the advertised products any more than the best salesman in the world could! Another pet hate is the current tranche of BT and other related ads offerring special introductory prices etc and giving stuff away worth '£XX.XX'. I have news for them, what's it's worth to me is £0 because I would never buy such items! But the success of advertising is proved by sales and does show just how gullible the general public are!

I think you'll find that whereas Plusnet has been around since 2000, BT only acquired the company in 2006 and operate the brand as a largely autonomous subsidiary. Rather like WalMart's acquisition of Asda.

I get a large variety of ads while on this forum. A real mix! I do hate the ones targetted at joint pain and other "elderly" ailments! Geez - I ain't that old.
