I've put this in General as it probably has a bearing (major or minor) on every mode of transport in and around London.
1) Are the planned shutdowns of the SSR going ahead?
2) Are any modes of transport running to revised timetables for the duration?
3) I'd be interested to hear how staff and fellow passengers feel about whether it is noticeably busier, and obviously if the service can cope!

I've heard the Pope is staying near Elm Park on his visit
Apparently they arranged to take him to Hyde Park in the Pope mobile, but he has insisted on public transport, to be seen as a Pope of the people!
he plans to take the District shuttle to Dagenhem East, bus to Barking, C2C to Fenchurch, walk to Tower Hill and across on the District
fair play to him!

I'd be interested to see what TTNs there are published (if any) - I've got a fair smattering of them for his antecedent.

I think he's staying at Lambeth Palace while he's here.
I live a few streets away from the Westminster Cathedral and it's a right pain. All parking suspended for the whole weekend and on Saturday there'll be police stopping anyone from coming through my road. If I want to get back into my block of flats I've got to show photo ID and a utility bill. How annoying!

It's strange that he wants to be seen as a 'man of the people' and yet is happy to come as a 'head of state' (hence us the taxpayers having to fund it)......................
Who thought the idea up (state visit) anyway? Surely not one T Blair as soon as he converted to Catholic.

Rumour has it that it was Gordon Brown who invited him over knowing full well that he wouldn't be in office and that it'd cost a fortune to police. As if he hasn't cost London enough already with his PPP botch-up.

At the moment, Edinburgh resembles a large bus park and there are more policemen about than I thought LBP had.

I suspect there will be some police there from specialist protection units who normally do things like travel with the royals, politicians, foreign dignitaries at embassies, etc

The Queen sent a formal invitation which was relayed by Blaire and Brown, apparently. There hasn't been a state visit by the leader of the Holy See for about 500 years, and so I've heard said by clergy, theres a big difference between state and spiritual visits. I think though that its possibly a symbolic olive branch to have him over here in this capacity as part of the still ongoing emancipation of Catholics in the UK. 500 years is quite long enough for an standoff to last right? It'll cost a lot, but how much did Blaire launching his memouirs cost the tax payer? I feel a bit sorry for the guy, it seems hes damned if he does and damned if he doesnt with almost everything. And some of the s*** the media has been coming out with about it all... beggars belief. Last time I went to a Tridentine, the congregations average age was about 35, so not old enough to remember it first time around. Yet apparently whordes of people are angry and upset that hes a fan of introducing such things. Parishes need approval from the diocesis to say an old rite mass afaik atm, he just wants to make it easier to celebrate this and the latin mass. Its quite amusing how some of the younger clergy are vehmontly against both, but when you find out the (usual) reason why (they dont like speaking latin or singing) it all fits together. If religion is taken as a personal thing, then why should anyone follow anyones dogma over the proper way to do it? It works both ways, traditionalist vs modernist. Anyway, once again the media is looking for a hate figure. It comes to something when the Evening Standards editorial is the one calling for calm and sound reasoning :/

Saw a bit of a open-air Mass by the pope from Glasgow attended by tens-of-thousands. I did not know there were so many Catholics in Scotland! My grandmother (long deceased) - a died-in-the-tweed Scot-Presbyterian from Banff was always regaling my brother and I with stories from the "Bloody Mary" days about 550 years ago. She literally hated Catholics (even though we were Catholics). She also expressed bad opinions about my dad. Her daughter (my mother, also long deceased) must have been more enlightened - she married my dad who was an American of German-Catholic descent. I therefore got the impression that there were not more than a handful of Catholics hiding out in Scotland. Just goes to show... Her daughter (my mother, also long deceased) must have been more enlightened - she married my dad who was an American of German-Catholic descent. I may never have watched the news about this without me reading about the trip here on this forum. Thanks!

So I hear he travelled by tube, did they provide a special train or clear a carriage for him?
