Hi,
I'm going to be taking a short break in Berlin next week - travelling there by train.
I can probably wrangle being allowed to spend say 90 minutes just travelling on the U- and S-Bahn. I can also argue that we could take the occasional detour.
I was going to try to go on the U1 to Warschauer Straße, and U55. Anyone got any recommendations as to other stations/stretches of line to try to visit?
Thanks for any thoughts,
Michael

There's a few places I'd recommend in Berlin: - Berlin Hauptbahnhof station - 5 levels, 3 of which are served by trains
- Visit the Fernsehturm (television tower that looks like a speared golf ball) in the old Eastern part of the City. It overlooks surface rail services traveling across the city into Alexanderplatz station pretty much immediately below
- Berlin museum of Transport & Technology
I've paid a visit to Berlin on three occasions (2001, 2003 & 2007) and it really is a wonderful city. I've captured photos of the rail systems every time I've visited, which can be found HERE along with other European City visits... apologies as I've currently got them all bundled together I hope they give a flavour of what's in store for you...

I've lived in berlin before now. From the Hauptbahnhof take the one of the RE/RB trains to Postdam or Wansee. Beautiful towns on the outskirts of Berlin. Boating, walks gelato, summer cakes... The Warschauer Strasse station is not impressive, but the Warschauer Bruecke (the older of the two bridges) is. You get a great view from the Spree if you walk West from the U1 station. It's also conveniently located right beside the East Side Gallery. Go to Frankfurter Tor if you want to see the best views of Communist architecture in Berlin. Looking West you get great views of Alex (Fernsehrturm) between the Neo-Classical buildings that run along Karl Marx Allee. If you manage, go to Gesundbrunnen for berliner-unterwelten.de/Guided tours of various Berlin Underground tunnels. I particularly like the tour which depicts how the city was divided and how that effected the transport system. Careful though, the English language tours fill up rapidly. It's also customary to drink beer on the U-bahn during the evening or on the way out to a social event (within moderation). Berliners take great pride that all other Germans scoff at this uncouth habit! Hope you have a good trip.

Thanks for the responses.
We are travelling from London by train, so will be arriving at the Hauptbahnhof, and are planning a day in Potsdam.
I have been to Berlin once before - in 1986, and spent most of my time in Berlin - Hauptstadt der DDR (aka East Berlin) I managed to travel on the whole of the U-Bahn system in East Berlin during my stay. The only other system I've done completely is Glasgow. I regret that I didn't manage to go on the West Berlin lines U6 or U8 through the ghost stations.
I'll report back next weekend.
