Well I thought I'd seen it all in my almost 9 years on the railway, but today was a new one.....
I was at Kew Gardens going west to Richmond, and was fully berthed in the platform with my doors open when I saw a woman walking across the bridge ahead with an umbrella. All of a sudden it came apart in her hand and the wind took the top part of it, complete with the.....well the pole? stem? the bit between the handle and the top anyway....
So it blows up into the air and then falls onto the up/eastbound track in front of a class 313 that's just arriving from Richmond. I held out on closing my doors to see what the drivers reaction would be....he simply carried on braking for the station - presumably thinking his train would make mince meat of the said brolly.
Well he went over it and what a sight - I so wish I had my phone out and on video - it literally exploded ;D ;D Flames came out of both sides of the 313 and there was so much smoke I initially lost sight of the 313. I was quite astounded that a humble umbrella would go like that.
I fully expected to get stuck at Richmond with the said 313 stalled with flashed over motors or the like, but happily there appeared to have been no lasting damage to the 313 judging by the fact that there were no suspensions or anything.
Anyway, if any of my fellow drivers spot the melted remains of an umbrella in the four foot, you now know why! ;D ;D
