Yep, just watched that on the BBC News. Close call doesn't come into it... She very nearly rolled over, onto the juice rail.

All the more surprising because the juice rail is unprotected top-contact.

Almost as hairy as the Indian Railways clip that was doing the rounds with the bloke fried when he climbs on the roof and touches 25kv.

You can see the driver banging on the windscreen before the train stops. Not nice for her I'd imagine.

The person at the headwall was truly heroic and I believe the location they picked was instrumental in saving valuable seconds in reaction and braking time. I do however think the adreniline tookover as they are still sticking thier arms out over the platform edge as the train comes in!!!

As you can see from the video there was no 'suicide pit' present, as we have in London. Does anybody know if these pits were installed at time of construction or were they added a at later date?.

I'm certain it depends on date of construction. Certainly the Victoria Line had them from new,in fact some were (are) extra deep to allow them to be used for train inspection as well. I think there was a programme of installation from about the '30s on,with all new TUBE stations from then on having them built as new. Sub-surface and above-ground tube stations don't have them (correct me if I'm wrong......)

There are pictures from the war time of the deep level stations being used as shelters with hammocks being strung between the running lines after the juice was switched off, so the pits must have been there in at least 1939.

I think there was a rolling progtramme from about 1936 onwards - what would clinch the date would be if Southgate was provided with them from new.
*delves into library*
I'm pretty sure when the Bakerloo extension from Finchley Road to Baker Street was built in 1939 they were already established practice (they're certainly not mentioned expressly in TC Supp. 42/39 which is the signalling instruction for the extension) - I'm pretty sure that they were provided on the extension to Morden which would date the idea's inception back to at least 1926.
I think that 'Rails through the Clay' mentions the rolling programe to provide the pits was in force during 1934-5, although the Morden and Cockfosters extensions were provided with them.

"Reconstructing London's Underground" says (anti) suicide pits were first provided on the Cockfosters extension in 1932. In 1934, a programme commenced of retro-fitting these to a further 91 platforms.

Follentfant isn't quite right - I've seen a picture of South Wimbledon at opening somewhere with an anti-suicide pit dated 1926

A similar view of South Wimbledon appears to depict a deeper pit although the detail is unclear.

Does the PED stations on the JLE have suicide pits? I've been in the cab several times in the past, but can't remember seeing them.

Do suicide pits actually work? I can tell you from experience that they often make the difference between a fatality and a severe injury. There's many cases of people losing limbs instead of their lives due to falling clear of the train.

Moderator hat onPlease keep in mind that one unders is a very touchy subject and in accordance with Rule 7.2 such discussion isn't permitted per se. Hopefully nobody will bring the subject up, so this is merely a timely reminder. Removes hatRob made an interesting point, and that's a story I have heard in that the great depression was a reason. That timelines the late 1920's or early 1930's

Hmmm.....was thinking there was, I remember episodes from when I was a Waterloo CSA involving dropped phones etc, there seemed to be a little room underneath the rails. Was a while ago now though I must admit......
