The Met has one, the Central has two(?) What happens on the other tube lines with a sizeable outdoor section?
Is it about how rural they get? gradients?
(quesions inspired by those nice pics of the new Central RAT

the key to the operation of the RAT (more knowledge of the Met one myself) is the amount of foliage likely to drop on the railhead
hence the implementation of the Leaf Fall timetable (Met only) from early October to mid December
gradient can come into play, as the key section on the Met is the down hill between Amersham and Ricky (where an additional 3 minutes running time is added SB only - down the grade - for the duration of the leaf fall season), however it is the leaf fall/foliage issues that cause this
central have their RAT operation, but no special timetable for the normal train service, I'm guessing they dont have the same combination of a severe-ish down grade allied to heavy leaf fall on the same section?

Hmmm... wonder why the Northern doesn't have one for the northern sections? It's pretty leafy and pretty steep...

Could it be that the Northern has different driving strategies, doesn't go through leafy suburbia and just doesn't need these anti-effete measures.....

Although the Northern Heights may appear steep they are nothing compared with the Chilterns! The Met justifably has a leaf fall timetable. This is one of the charms of the Met!

The leaf-fall season. Yes. Very charming - especially on one of those particularly damp and windy mornings about mid-way through the season ;D

Try and spot an A60 without flats during the leaf fall season!

"Could it be that the Northern has different driving strategies, doesn't go through leafy suburbia and just doesn't need these anti-effete measures....." Aye, lad, it's grim up north (London)... As for the gradient point - is the central any more steeply graded? I would have thought from a general view of the geography it's not that lumpy out there. Stuff it, I'd just like some non-standard stuff to see from time to time...

Is it possible that the northern would have had its own unit had the Northern Heights plan come to fruition? Almost certainly, once the LNE goods trains had stopped Finsbury Park - Edgware there would have been nothing to clear the railhead. However, given the planned services I could easily envisage a NH RAT or sleet loco travelling from Wellington or Highgate Woods siding to Drayton Park and reversing; I think Finsbury Park high level (although there would have been suitable crossovers for LNE engines coming to or from Finsbury Park Nos 5 or 7 'boxes) would have been like Leyton and open more at night for the transfers between the systems, whereas Drayton Park would have been open continuously. Highgate Woods would have been a good base for the Ally Pally branch too.
