As part of their warm store they are moved every so often between Gillingham and Stewarts Lane via Victoria.

Are they not in Chart Leacon? Five of the 12 originally leased to South Eastern are in Chart Leacon. 508212 is at either Slade Green or Gillingham, to provide spare parts. The remaining 6 are kept at Stewarts Lane, but are moved to Gillingham in convoys - they were originally meant to go singularly, but the unit was gapped at Stewarts Lane on the first occasion and required rescuing by a sister set - for maintenance.

Could they not be used as emergency replacements when units of the regular stock go on the blink?

Cor, I remember when they were new! Was it really THAT long ago? To link two threads (!),I went on the first 508 Railtour, and we went over the East Putney-Point Pleasant "Up" curve.....I was in the cab for that bit!

I can name the first driver who put a 508 in the sand drag at St.Margaret's, and no, it wasn't me but it could have been. I put one in the sand at Hampton Court.
I can't remember who it was who put the brake on to stop at Putney in the evening peak, and the train decided it wasn't going to stop until Mortlake, no matter what the driver did...worrying times indeed.
