I noticed that at Walthamstow Central the large "next train" arrow lights, which point to the platform from which the next train is leaving, have been disabled.
In their place, an LED screen with tiny writing has been installed, which now states (if you come close enough to read it) the next train platform number in small hard to read text.
This is a clear "downgrade", from a very clear and easily readable sign, to a sign which is very hard to read, and probably impossible to read for the poor sighted.
Does anyone know the story behind this, and whether the good signs will spring back to life?
Did something similar happen at Brixton?

AIUI the platform signs (next train out) at Walthamstow and Brixton are both driven by a programme machine, S4 at Brixton and S3 at Walthamstow. Could these have been decommissioned as part of the VLU; or is the display a temporary measure during the transition period?

The signs have not been physically removed so there still is hope. Without them, I expect the new display violates the disabilities act anyway...

At one stage the DMIs t Brixton and Walthamstow used to arrow-point the trains in the way the Jubilee Line ones at Charing Cross used to. I wonder why they don't anymore? In fact, the DMIs at Brixton and Walthamstow don't even show the countdown-to-departure anymore, either.

I don't ever remember there being a countdown at either Walthamstow or Brixton!?! Always just used to look out for the red light switching to green to give me a 5 second heads up on departure!
Have there ever been large DMIs at Walthamstow? I don't remember any.

Rather than just whinging on here I actually complained about this to TfL. And they replied! :-)
Unfortunately they have told me that the new DMIs are a permanent replacement to the old clear lights. :-(
Who makes these decisions? Grrr!
:-(

Is there a way to check that they are compliant with the DDA? If there is a way, and they aren't compliant (as they don't sound it), is there a way to make an official complaint?

Good question! I wonder how specific the DDA is?

They used to display the information in the same manner as the on at Charing Cross on the Jubilee Line. For some reason, however, they stopped doing so a few years ago and (when they weren't just flashing "No Smoking" over and over again : merely showed the destination of the next two trains.

LEDs are regrettably seen as progress, even when they blatently aren't. I wonder how accountable the people that make these decisions are?

As I say, their paucity of information (comapred to DMIs onthe rest of the line) was a relatively recent development. I've no idea why they stopped the DMIs at Brixton and Walthamstow from fully functioning. They used to display info like this: 1 <-WALTHAMSTOW ready 2 SEVEN SISTERS-> 3 mins Rather like the Jubilee line ones at Charing Cross. However, in recent years all they did was show things like: 1 WALTHAMSTOW 2 SEVEN SISTERS Without even the countdown, let alone the arrows. Just why, I'll never know. A lot of the time, all they ever showed at all was the "No Smoking" message over and over again. Poor - very, very poor, imo.

I must say its a few years since I used the Vic at Walthamstow... but I remember it as tubeflight describes :
1 <-WALTHAMSTOW ready 2 SEVEN SISTERS-> 3 mins
And they was always accurate when I got a train from there, accurate in the sense that the countdown was about right (hence knowing which train would go first) and accurate in the destination. The system worked fine whenever I used the station.
Another example of so- called "progress"
Like the new DMI's at Tower Hill EB, all they ever say is HELD. The TD's and times are always wrong, and all you ever get is an announcement saying "services are currently disrupted blah blah" ... whereas the old black DMI's seemed to work fine !
I have noticed similar things happening with DMI's at Putney Bridge EB recently, is this supposed to be real-time information? The technology is shockingly poor, and no sign of it improving within the next ten years on some lines ! However, its OK because the station has got a lick of paint, and we are playing announcements about what a good service we run.. *sigh*

I would hope that the new signalling will have a bit more intelligence than the current (i.e. switching next platform arrow shortly prior to the train getting a green light, as opposed to switching next platform when the green light is given as at present). This would speed up departures, but would condem the old next train indicators to the scrap heap.

Well what do you know? As of yesterday, the big clear light box signs indicating the next train at Walthamstow, have been reactivated! :-D
