I noticed today while looking on the TFL website that Gants Hill Station was closed due to vandalism. Did vandals get into the station during the Christmas day shutdown, like what happened at Camden Town a while ago

Isn't there CCTV at these places? Isn't there a central place this can be monitored?!

Aren't stations manned even though there's no service? I seem to recall this being mentioned on here before.

I believe there is one mobile SS per area of line (roughly about 10 stations or so), he moves around with access to company vehicle. And to answer a earlier question. No, CCTV isn't remotely monitored. Only viewable in the SS office.

Gants Hill can be monitored from the Central Line SCC. Unfortunately that closed around 0130 on Christmas Morning.

We are in danger of giving vandals details of LU's security precautions (or lack of) here.
In fact there were new procedures tried this year but I won't go into those.
The EDF workers' strike also complicated matters with regard to traction current. Hopefully that won't be a problem next year.

The TfL website says that Gants Hill has reopened (as it is not shown as closed).

I went to Gants Hill today to see what damage had been done. It seems whatever had been done had been pretty much removed, and there were were only a few tags still left in evidence, on the track itself or on the advertising posters, one of which said 'Merry Christmas to all'. There didn't seem to be any obvious 'clean' areas where tags had been removed off tiling, etc. so perhaps it wasn't as bad as was first feared.
Luckily, it seems, no permanent or majorly expensive damage like there was at Camden Town a couple of years ago.
Just as an addendum, while I was there, there was a lady who'd obviously never seen or used an escalator before, her friend behind her was trying to explain what to do, but the first lady was having none of it. Eventually she stepped on, but put her feet in between two steps, which a few seconds later, when they were at different heights, caused her to look extremely panicky and concerned! Made me smile anyway!

Ah yes....I recall the vandalism at Camden Town a few years' ago....terrible. Someone got in and destroyed all the original 1900s tiling, then fly-posted every painted area with black posters advertising XFM Radio....(oh hang on....that was "official" vandalism...).

Oh no, not Gants Hill That's an exceptionally lovely station. Seems that every Christmas some pillocks come in and vent their idiocy somewhere on the system. Grr! I've seen very little on trains lately. I think the last I saw was at Baker Street when two C stocks came by in opposite directions and they'd both - the whole length of each train - been plastered with a splurty black stripe. I laughed, but mainly in horror. I just couldn't believe it could have been that bad and not been spotted! Is the lack of train grafitti due to better prevention (either in access to sidings/depots/security or in anti-grafitti paints) or better cleaning? Very disappointed to hear about this, esp after Camden Town a couple of years back. Little gits.

I spotted the message about Gants Hill being closed due to vandalism as well - thank goodness that the damage could be sorted within the day.
It's a shame that the traction current wasn't on over Christmas; without giving too much information away, was this station an 'easy target' for the vandals?

Wood Lane can monitor all Track to Train CCTV at all stations but obviously not all at the same time and are privvy to total station coverage at only a handful of City stations...
Volunteers were asked for to cover Xmas Day at the SCC but the 'Xmas Scrooge' was not being very festive so nobody took up the offer of pay x 2.
If management were that worried and had no volunteers then why didn't they spoil ther own Xmas Day and go in to man these places, oh I forgot, that type of thing is for the low life workers and not for jumped up managers, might have got themselves an MBE for it.......
Assuming the 'decorators' didn't come in at street level then the obvious deterrent is to leave the juice on and hope they make a rather large mistake.......

Well the juice was left on - for other reasons - but alas there were no 'mistakes' made.
Indeed graffiti vandals seem more confident around live track than do certain grades of operational staff these days!

@cravens60ts - lots of people nowadays, as someone has already commented, are happy to work on Christmas Day, whether it be to get out of the house or because of non-religious reasons. Double pay to me sounds fair and I'd be happy to do that - I don't know why you're making it into a 'lowlife' staff vs management issue! If they offered 5 x pay, it'd be in the tabloids for extravagant spending of public money!

I don't know why you're making it into a 'lowlife' staff vs management issue!
1. Because I can, this is an open forum and if you don't like my tone that's tough.
2. That's exactly how some Senior Managers view those on lower grades.
3. Make it worth while to go in on Xmas day and there would be motre volunteers than needed.
4. I didn't see the singles, childless, atheists, non-christians etc queing up to work Xmas Day for pay x2.
5. No one was asking for exorberant rates, pay x2 plus a Day off and a Taxi Door-Door both ways, that is reasonable.

Please, keep it clean and civil..
Actually that surely equals pay x3 - since you would be paid twice for Xmas day, plus once for the day you took off in lieu? It doesn't sound bad at all - outwith the rail industry people are on much less.

If by a taxi "door-to-door" you mean from home to your station, then this would be reasonable for someone who lives a short distance from the station they work at. However I know of at least one member of this forum (although not station staff) who commutes (or commuted) from the Margate area to the Earls Court area, and I doubt they are the only LU employee with such a long journey to work. A taxi over this distance would cost very significantly more. I suspect that when packages for working on Christmas day are being developed that they will be costed as accurately as possible. A taxi cost would be such a big variable that I can't see the beancounters being at all happy about it.

I didn't see the singles, childless, atheists, non-christians etc queing up to work Xmas Day for pay x2. I probably fit that description quite accurately - but why should I be expected to work it? Just cos I'm single, don't have kids of my own and am not into any sort religion *.......why the heck should I sacrifice myself ahead of anyone else? Generally I'm extremely tolerant of others views (let's forget I'm an admin of this forum for a minute) - but that just about takes the biscuit! As with every other Christmas, this year I was with my best mate & his family.........I got to see his kids open their presents (I've known them both since the day they were born) - I might not have kids of my own but getting to see them get excited etc, etc, was magic enough for me. Why should I automatically have to miss out on that and be at the front of the queue to work Christmas day just because I don't have a wife or kids of my own? I absolutely love the whole Christmas day thing and would never ever willingly work it just cos I'm single and have no kids - and no amount of money would change my mind on that one. * Religion isn't actually all that relevant to this thread, but just in case it dose crop up, please remember the forum rules folks!

Well I am single, well, dating someone, and I went into work for double pay and a day in lieu, I did a double shift, so was already at work anyway. A colleague had to drive me home, as a taxi was offered, then withdrawn.

Colin. I tried to write that in such a way as to point out that that is exactly what some Managers expect and has in fact been suggested, it was in no way meant to stereotype those that fit that bill, just a generalisation..... and I agree wholeheartedly with you, why should you be expected to work.
Chris M. Door to Door means Home to Work and return, if they want you to volunteer to work Xmas Day then there must be a premium to pay.

Surely they are paying this premium by giving you the extra pay though? I don't see why it ought to be the employers responsibility in this case.

There is a rumur that LU want Christmas day working to be agreed as part of the upcoming pay negotiations. So we may not get a choice whether we want to work or not in future.
