C2C is indeed a subsidiary of National Express. Then why is it still called C2C? One is now National Express East Anglia, and there is also National Express East Coast, and their bus companies were also renamed - Travel London is now National Express London. So shouldn't C2C be renamed? Run out of money? I doubt many people care what their train company is called - and NatEx Group probably have more pressing issues as to its future to deal with!

Perhaps "c2c" is a more successful brand than "one" was? The east coast franchise was newly won from GNER and so a name change was always going to happen there - maybe they wanted to integrate the two in the public mind - make it more of a network? Especially if they were in the running to get the Thameslink franchise as well (I don't know).
The bus name changes were probably a separate decision to create a uniform corporate identity.

I recall reading somewhere that c2c has quite a good local recognition and is generally well thought of, so it was decided to leave it as it was. Otherwise it would have been added to the NXEA brand or re-branded as National Express Thameside

'one' was a bodge job from the beginning. First Great Eastern was very highly thought of locally. A proper railway run by proper railwaymen. When they were shut out of the bidding there were a lot of letters written to MPs.
One rapidly gained a reputation for being a miserable bunch of cheapskate shysters. They obviously thought that if they changed their name, the locals would forget this. Sorry NXwhatever, your East Anglian outfit is still run by miserable cheapskate shysters.

Just to update on the issue of c2c... which I know is absolutely nothing to do with the thread title etc. I just saw talk being made about it, and thought this is relevent: c2c is to be renamed National Express c2c... the latest on train 'magazine' or leaflet confirms this, and this is available also on the c2c website. Train repainting information is also included in this article. I'd noticed a while back that the timetable leaflets for c2c were already in NX style, despite still having the existing c2c logo at the bottom. So it was clear it was only a matter of time.
Anyway, the pun on the acronym seems in a very similar vein (and with a similar degree of inventiveness/imagination - or otherwise), as that other old chestnut, i.e. WAGN = We Are Going* Nowhere.
(* staff interpretation. Replace with "Getting" for the passengers' version).
