that does not happen at all sites Colin only the older ones like Parsons Green and West Ken as when the signalman takes a release it kills the feed to the busbar controlling the signal selection circuits ( JNBX ) so thats why every signal goes back to danger when a release is being called for. On newer sites this does not apply and in effect the signalman could just release the signal lever which has been pushed in error and have the remaining routes work as normal but as safety and the rules which were wrote years ago state all signals must be at danger whilst taking a release

I was once rear tripped on a C stock in excatly the way that Colin describes at PG. The starter was at danger when I arrived and cleared after about 30 seconds, so maybe they had taken a release and no-one told me because they'd got it back to danger before I approached.
Trouble is that on a C stock when rear tripped you just lose trainline air, so you're sat there thinking Front trip? Rear trip? Deadman MCB? Trainline burst? Until you've done some checks you just don't know, and then you have to go down to the rear cab to reset before you can move.
On a D stock, the TMS lights up "Tripcock Rear" and you just sort it out at the terminus, it doesn't prevent forward movement. Much less traumatic!

I have part of a scan of the Parsons Green area (which I know better) - I think i'll be able to explain better what you are both trying to confuse us all with ;D ;D ;D When talking about back tripping, you have to remember that the trip arm at the rear of the train is still lowered as per when it travels in that direction. Now to Parsons Green: As a train arrives in platform 2 (eastbound), it's pressence is 'sensed' and the train stops associated with WF6 & WF4 will lower as the train passes them. Once the train is fully berthed, the train stop associated with WF6 will rise to protect against a 'wrong direction movement'. Now, for arguments sake, let's say shunt signal WF34 is cleared in error. The signal operator takes a release (putting WF34 back to danger). After 2 minutes the signal operator can clear signal WF38 and the train can continue - but it will be backed tripped. The reason for the back trip is that when the release was taken, the train stop associated with WF4 rises back to it's normal position. Hope that helps!! It's a clearer example, and given my potted knowledge on release backlocks, wrong-road trainstop release and blockjoint positioning, it makes perfect sense that such a facility is present.

I have misplaced my traffic circular at the moment ( ), but I get the impression that it will be sunday morning closures, with trains resuming around 1300.

Correction to my earlier post - the sunday engineering work on the Richmond branch finishes at 9am, so it's only for a couple of hours at the start of service.
