Hi guys,
I rekon there should be a special last un - refurb D78 stock train from upminster to a destination.
In a certain way they are the last trains that hold character.
I use them from upminster bridge into london and have have a liking to them.
The new trains are great but the last of the un painted trains have a slow death.
I am going to make a website upi with some short films pictures of the old un-refurbished stock.
Called The Last Silver Lining
What do you think guys.
Like the 1959 stock
When there gone there gone.
cheers James

I have heard its gonna take some EIGHT years to refurb all the D78's. Any truth in this??? Unlikely - the intention is to get one back every 2 weeks within the next few months. Since there are already 5 back, that leaves another 70 to do (including the ones that are away at the moment) which would take approx 3 years. It would take 8 years if they only got them back every 6 weeks, but now that they should be getting into the swing of things, they should be able to do them quicker.

Given that there will, according to the plan, be only about 8 years between the last refurb entering service and all D stocks being replaced by S stock, couldn't one be left as a "heritage" unit in original condition? That unit would then be a prime candidate for preservation when the D stocks are withdrawn.
Of course I can see some objections on the grounds that non-refurb is less passenger friendly.

Personally I think that they should go the whole hog and not only refurb the 'D's but re-equip them as well. New power packs,AC motors. and digital technology would do wonders. They should also replace those soppy small wheels with proper surface sized ones. The 'D' would then have another 30 years in them.
The Berlin S-Bahn got 70 years out of the 476's by several re-furbs and re-euips.

I can recall replying to one thread on this forum many moons ago (before Mr DD accidentally deleted the old District Line threads ;D ;D ;D) asking whether it might be a good idea if the internal fittings of one carriage/unit be reclaimed so that a unit/car could be at least refitted back to pre-refurb appearance if one were preserved Would anyone have an idea/suggestion whether this could be achievable or arranged (or who to approach with this idea)

I have no idea if this would be feasable or not*, but the people to ask would be the people doing the refurbing and the people who would be preserving it (presumably the museum).
*This might depend on how destructive the refurbing process is to the fittings. It might in the end be easier use replacements tot he original designs.

I think the last unfurb should be decked out inside and have a party which non stops all the stations so staff can be inside having a great time while passing passengers waiting for a train lol yipppeeee
In the peak hour a must!

I wonder if the ball hanging fittings will be surreptitiously "lifted" from the last silver D78, just as they were from the last 1959TS to run on the Northern...
