The proposals for orbirail, renovating the NLL and redoing the services on it go back at least 34 years. Fact of the matter is public transport is the distant relation of modern day transport politics, at least in England. For some time I lived in Stratford, and while there was work to be had, it was very often at the far western end of the Met, from Harrow on the Hill onwards, and quite often at Rickmansworth and Chalfont & Latimer. This would take me up to 90 minutes, from leaving home to signing in, which was sort of okay given the on-the-ground distance. But if I were travelling to similar places from Hampton/Feltham, which I did one night a week, I would have to leave at exactly the same time, despite there being thirty miles less to travel. Had I a car it would take me fifteen minutes (travelling late at night round the nearly empty M25) - but train requires a bus to Hounslow East, a change at Acton Town, a change at Rayners Lane, change at Harrow and a change at Chalfont. The 34 years you talk about cover 6 year of "Events, dear boy" - then 18 years of Tory misrule and 10 years of Labour incompetence and hide-bound cowardice. (Mr. Tony was indeed a safe pair of hands.) I don't think rail projects stood a chance. More specifically to the NLL: is it the freight paths that keep the service at its current level, with old signalling that's fine for the current low speeds, making it all self-fulfilling?

Camden will be remodelled in a 16 week blockade in 2010 (Camden to Stratford closed).
Then starting in 2012 Camden will be remodelled again.

Camden doesn't get remodelled at all in the first set of works. All the changes are east of there.

All in all, I really wish they would do something about passenger provision on the eastbound at Camden Road - those stairs and the open ended 'shoebox' act like a wind tunnel at most times. Still, it would be nice to see the presently disused viaduct/bridge behind the current fence put back to use. Something would have to be done at ticket halle level, as the subway is blocked up, and probably filled up with rubble and allsorts from when the buildings on the old platforms were demoilished.
