Just been watching the news and seen the devastation the fire caused unbelievable that no one was killed in that just goes to show you how well trained the staff are in that area. What really annoyed me most on the news was the passengers that are complaining and saying stuff like "What really annoyed me most was that we were in ashford and the turned the train around sent us back to London why couldn't we just go in the tunnel its a total inconvenience" Are people really that thick!!!!? There is a flipping fire in a tunnel which was at 1000degrees and they want there train to go thro it what is wrong with these people the fu***ng really P me off all they think about is them selfs!!! Sorry rant over ;D ;D

But all mr and mrs jones can think about is getting to oxford circus and they now cant because there are no trains oh dear shock horror that knew tablecloth will need to wait and who gets is in the knock us poor csa's. people seem to forget that when it is nice and sunny there is a thing called WALKING!!!!!!

The other thing that narks me is that, as the fire happened on a train, somehow this has developed into a 'the railways aren't safe' debate. All three Channel Tunnel fires have been caused by, er, LORRIES!!!!!!!

I think the public need to open their eyes a touch. Yes, one tunnel will be operational soon, but one tunnel means one train....
The second, fire damaged one, will need enormous amounts of fixing, testing, repairing, retesting and I don't know what. It could be weeks before it's open again.
Odd how people expect it to be like (say) a car fire, where the vehicle is simply moved off the road, and normal service is resumed.....

Actually it's not quite one tunnel one train... ISTR reading how the service recovered following a previous fire... IIRC both tunnels are bi directionally signalled and there's 2 cross overs under the channel. So assuming the passage of trains will not affect the recovery work etc. there's still 5 out of the 6 sections available. I think they run a special timetable with alternating flights of N/b and S/b shuttles, I'd imagine around 3/4 before swapping, to get best service out of the single track bit...

From memory there are two #-overs, British and French side, about 1/3rd in. Trains can therefore by-pass a section, and thus increase capacity. Both tunnels are bi-di. Didn't they use 'flights' of trains last time there was a fire? It has been suggested that freight trains might start tonight and passenger after the weekend. Air France are laying on 1000 extra seats, with bigger planes. Vive La France! Years ago there was fog over the Channel Islands and no flights could take off and land for about four days. BA sent a Tristar from Gatwick, the largest aircraft ever to land there, especially to collect part of the backlog of passengers. I wonder if AF could send a 747 over?

Being a man born in Kent, I have tried to find out about this... All I know is that it involved a lorry carrying some kind of chemical. Watching the Kent newsclip on BBC News online, tells me it took some 16 hours to bring under control!
Ajax, I had a similar situation some months ago... was off duty and someone had fallen in front of a train, but luckily train stopped short... Woman refused to get out of the pit, so one pax becoming agitated over a 20 second delay, remonstrated with the driver, asking him to 'just drive over the daft [text removed] cow. I thought, how nasty can you get? it might be his wife/child/work colleague next time... I had to talk to him. I think he saw my viewpoint.
