If I get an Oyster from a station, presumably I can still set up an online account to view journeys / top up online, can I?

Yup, you need to register it shortly after receiving it and you get the journey history online after the first time you top up online.

AIUI, you can set up an online account from an existing Oyster Card and top it up and buy season tickets online. However, I think the online journey history only shows journeys made using credit bought online.

At least with my Child Oyster, once you top up online the first time the system shows all journeys after that which are topped up conventionally.

Hm. OK, cheers lads. With registering, it asks for a card number - (call me a dunce ) is this given to you somewhere when you get the card? The Oyster I used to have, hasn't been used at all over the last couple of years, and didn't bother to find out about the online stuff. Hence, just a lot easier for me to get a brand spanking new one.

Hence, just a lot easier for me to get a brand spanking new one. My Oystercard is well over two years old, and works perfectly well online..... Save the £3 deposit (which is automatically charged when you get a new card), and try registering your existing one. You can get a new cover from a Tube ticket office if you want it to look more modern! You do, however, have to have filled in the paper form that was (probably) handed out with your oystercard Best of luck Joe!

Two problems with that: 1) It's got me as with a 16-17 photocard on it, which I really can't be bothered to change as I've only got about £5 or so on there. 2) I don't have that form anymore ;D
A quick query: With the 16-25 railcard, it gets you 35% (or so) off the daily capping rate on the tube etc, and not just when you're doing a journey over PAYG equipped NR stations?

It only gives you a discount on the daily off peak capping. Ive got my 16-25 on my adult Oyster and I keep getting capped £3.50 for a one day 1-3 travelcard (means cheap ride into town for me using the Central or Jubilee lines only). If you use if before 9:30 you pay the standard peak Oyster fares. As for online jounery history it only shows you the pay as you go stuff. I top up my Oyster at stations and it shows up on my online account as does when I touch in/out. Travelcards just come up blank. Tho I got my Oyster card online when I lived in kent if that makes a difference.

Does the system know when the railcard price cap should run out? Or does it rely on one's honesty?

I think the online journey history only shows journeys made using credit bought online. It shows all pay-as-you-go journeys, regardless of how topping up is done - although personally I find the display format (deduction on entry, refund on exit and total balance) rather confusing and it takes between 24 and 72 hours to update.

Cheers for the info - have now got an Oyster with YPR discount, and have registered it online.

Does the system know when the railcard price cap should run out? Or does it rely on one's honesty? The date is put in when you add it to your Oyster.

The reduced off-peak cap applies no matter what forms of travel you use. Because the reduced zone 2-6 off-peak cap is less than the £3 bus cap, even if you only travel by bus you get the benefit of the £2.80 cap.
