Interesting report. I have more than a little sympathy with the driver who, as I understand it, is being asked to watch for two things at once: the CCTV monitor on his desk (short range vision) and signal aspects in the tunnel (long range vision).
If the technology exists to put a CCTV screen on the driver's desk, why not a display of the next signal aspect?

If the technology exists to put a CCTV screen on the driver's desk, why not a display of the next signal aspect? That's in-cab signalling, which will be implemented on the Northern Line soon. Under ATO it's even easier as the driver can watch the CCTV monitor and let the train drive itself. It must be hard to see the platform easily on the small CCTV screens.

Under ATO it's even easier as the driver can watch the CCTV monitor and let the train drive itself. It must be hard to see the platform easily on the small CCTV screens. Far from it, I think the driver gets a good view of the platform. And besides, if, like that particular driver, you have 25+ years driving on the NL experience, you have a fairly good idea of when you need to be looking up from the CCTV to observe a signal.
