According to the lates issue of rail magazine crossrail could be scaled back to Heathrow instead of Reading/Maidenhead What will this actually mean in practice if they are planning to electrify to Oxford as aprt of another project? Joined-up thinking it is not. Or would there be a gap in the wires between West Drayton and Maidenhead? Another interesting article suggests that a relief route for the Brighton Main Line could be created by re-opening the Lewes - Uckfield and Sanderstead - Elmers End lines, seemingly forgetting that three-quarters of the latter is in use by Tramlink, much of it in tunnel - not to mention the congestion on the London Bridge approaches from Lewisham inwards. The same issue also has an article clearly written under the assumption that there would be trains running on the ELLX by the time it hit the shelves.

with crossrail supposed to open in 2017 and as i suspect thameslink will not be receiving new trains till around that time as well, wouldn't it be better for some crossrail service to be run to Oxford instead of terminating at Reading?
This could mean that some class 319's could be sent to Northern or Merseyrail.

If GWML electrification does not go ahead could Crossrail be used as enabling work for HS2 by absorbing Watford/Tring/MK/Northampton trains, thereby freeing up platorms currently occupied by those services?

Living in Maidenhead I have some serious concerns about Crossrail as currently proposed.
Terminating at Maidenhead pure madness as it is a dieing town full of empty offices with little industry or commerce apart from the RBWM council and their over zealous Community Enforcement Officers!
There is also not much space for a depot of sidings for any stock as it the former goods is a very overpriced station car park and I can't see that Goldmine being built on!
The services on the GW Mainline London Area branches including Bourne End/ Marlow will have their through services withdrawn and their whole future will be in doubt due to the need to keep DMU's to run them. Parry People Movers have been mooted as a solution what! although the council has launched some flying pigs to get the branch electrified!
I spoke with an alleged Project Manger a few years ago when they were publicising Crossrail and its benefits in Maidenhead Town Centre and quizzed him on the freight traffic and the impact of Crossrail on it. His reply was truly amazing! "There are only 3 freight trains a day so it won't be a problem" - maybe Mendip Rail trains are full of people and I was just to stupid to notice!
With the GWML electrification again under scrutiny and some political parties not committing to carry on with Crossrail so who knows what will happen?
Maybe we could tarmac over the railway and run buses to a Paddington coach terminal as that idea got canned for the Chiltern Line!
Sorry to be pessimistic but Crossrail is a project that has been around for 20 years and is still shrouded with uncertainty.

I hope not! Any Crossrail-type solution for those services would need to pass through Euston, if for nothing else than you'd be forcing all the passengers from the MML and ECML (who currently have a short walk or 1 station hop on the tube) down Thameslink to Farringdon to catch their trains north again. It really couldn't handle the load. If you wanted to free up Euston platforms you've got to send them south from Euston to either Victoria or Waterloo (which would then also free up capacity there - which is why I would suggest Waterloo as it needs it more). ...besides, they have a pretty good plan in place for reconstructing Euston with minimal disruption, made possible by the western extension giving capacity for the services displaced by the current phase of reconstruction.

Which ever way things go on 06/05, we may be lucky if Crossrail gets much further than a rig in Canary Wharf and a hole in TCR. Let's keep our fingers crossed that the plans as they are, actually get completed. I for one think London and SE will miss out if the plug is pulled. CR is a once in a generation opportunity.
