This is a hypothetical but I think a better way to do it; now that Monthly and Weekly travelcards are only avaliable on Oyster how come nobody has thought of changing the way they work. I'd much prefer it if rather than (let's say with a month) it running from 01/08/08-01/09/08 the card instead loaded on 30 days, and each day you use it you lose a day, so if you don't travel on Sunday you don't end up paying for that day like you do at the moment? I don't know if my explanation makes sense, but by effectively giving you 30 1 day travelcards that you can use on any day, rather than having them limited to within a block of time? The gates already remind you when you are about to run out of days, so that doesn't need to be changed, all that needs to occur is the card being told you have travelled on a day and crossing one off (which it does anyway for journey tracking). surely this is a better way of running them? It wouldn't cost TfL any more or lose them any more money than they are at the moment and would make travel more flexible for passengers customers. And make them happier too I guess.
Now, why am I wrong and why would this be a flippin' nightmare? It seems like the more sensible option so there must be some reason it isn't.

You say LU wouldn't loose any money - but they would. As things stand, you effectively pay whether or not you travel on a given day - by suggesting you only pay on days you actually travel, you'd be stretching your ticket validity to such an extent that you'd probably require one less 'monthly' per year. That's a nice saving for you but a loss of revenue to LU/T fL. Remember also that a Monthly ticket is discounted because you have bought bulk in advance. Perhaps your suggestion would be better if you said something along the lines of: customers using 'pay as you go', who earn 25+ daily Travelcard caps in a calendar month ought to be upgraded to a Monthly Travelcard? .........

The assumption would be if you're ticket was 30 x 1 day TC's then the product would be priced accordingly?
PAYG already offers a similar method of paying for days albeit with a maximum of £90 credit you can't buy more than a few weeks in advance.

If you only make simple return tube journeys to work and do not travel beyond that then pay-as-you-go might work out cheaper than a travelcard. Otherwise if you need even a fraction of the benefit of a travelcard on a daily basis then it is vastly better option with Sundays (and Saturdays) effectively being free so whether or not you travel on those days would be irrelevant to the saving you are already making.
Some examples:
Zones 1-6: A weekly travelcard is £44.60 * Five peak return tube journeys (at £3.50 each) is £35 * Five daily travelcards (at £13.80) is £55.20 = Simple commuting only makes pay-as-you-go cheaper, but if you also need a bus to/from the tube station it becomes £44 and the travelcard is arguably worth the extra 60p for the convenience, let alone it also covering any additional travel
Zones 1-3: A monthly travelcard is £109.10 * 23 peak return tube journeys (at £2.50 each for zones 1-4) is £115 * 23 daily travelcards (at £8) is £184 = Travelcard is the best option anyway.
Zones 2-4: A weekly travelcard is £20.20 * Five peak return tube journeys (£1.80 each) is £18 * Five daily travelcards (£8.40 for zones 2-6) is £42 = Just one additional trip beyond simple commuting and the travelcard is the best option
Incidentally, 23 days is the highest number of weekdays you can get in a calendar month.

I seem to remember hearing a while ago that there were plans to introduce weekly price capping i.e. similar to the current daily capping but charging users the cheapest fare to cover all the journeys made in a week. Is this true and if so, when will it happen?
