I was just reading that c2c was extending Oyster PAYG to Grays and Chiltern To Aylesbury,
what exactly does this mean for Oyster PAYG, will these stations be extended into the travelcard zone or will it be a fixed cost to do with the Rail Companies?

I am guessing that it will mean two things: First - you can use Oyster to buy a travelcard and your journey to London on your Oyster. Second - AIUI, season ticket holders will be able to use Oyster instead of having paper tickets.

David: I believe that Oyster season tickets are already valid and have been for a couple of years at least. This change is about Oyster PAYG which is not currently available at "Purfleet, Grays, Chafford Hundred and Ockendon" which this press release from January 2007 (the only thing I've found on the c2c website) says it "plans to have available by the summer of 2008" This press release, the only thing I can find on Chltern's site goes into no more detail than "we also plan to extend Transport for London’s OysterCard out to the commuter towns of High Wycombe and Aylesbury" I expect that for the c2c stations they'll either be moved to zone 6 or a new area of zone 7 will be created, but this is pure speculation on my part. I doubt that even zone 9 would be sufficient to get out as far as Aylesbury so I guess different arrangements will apply?

I think you'll find that the Travelcard boundary remains Upminster or Rainham on the c2c - this "extension" is purely 'pay as you go' only.
However, now that bus route route 370 is a fully fledged TfL route, and coupled with route 372, it is now possible to reach Lakeside Shopping centre purely by Travelcard (and Ockendon Station on bus 347) - c2c's nearest station to Lakeside is Chafford Hundred......and Ken Livingstone's failed 'Overground Network' did envisage controlling c2c services as far as Grays, which is a logical boundary point.
If the Travelcard boundary were extended to Grays, that would save a lot people a lot of money - I wonder how far c2c are willing to go down that road......

The Travelcard zone 6 boundary mostly corresponds with the Greater London boundary (and its subsidies). I'd imagine they'd put the extra c2c stations in 7/8/9, the fares for which are unsubsidised. On the Aylesbury branch they'd need to do a Watford Junction and charge special high fares, as currently Aylesbury is far more expensive and far further out than anything else on Oyster.
(I don't know if the extension Aylesbury is still on - I'd guess not)

I hadn't noticed any proposals to go as far as Aylesbury or Wycombe. It would make a lot of sense from the passengers' point of view to bring stations as far as Beaconsfield into the existing zones 7/8/9 to match the route through Amersham.
From a TfL point of view they must have enough on their plate to bring the existing lines within Greater London into PAYG.
I just want them to extend coverage as far as Romford so that I don't need to buy a paper ticket if I need to visit my elderly mother on a week night.

My first request for PAYG would be at least as far as Ilford, as this would give me another way home (167 bus) when the east end of the Central is playing up.

Wonder if TfL's decision to dump Transys will speed up or delay the expansion of Oyster?

As far as I know, all of National Express East Anglia within zones 1-6 will have PAYG in 2009.

Will they replaces the gates at Romford or will all Oyster holders still have to file out past an inspector with hand held reader?

Will they replaces the gates at Romford or will all Oyster holders still have to file out past an inspector with hand held reader? I don't use Romford much, but I hate those gates! I expect that they will be replaced.
