Clue for A..... It's a disused station, of sorts.
Of the two above guesses, neither are correct.

Is A one of the deep level shelters? Well, it was at one time part of the foot tunnel under The Thames......

East London Line...
Did they all at some time have proposals for escalators apart from Holloway Road which did have the Reno escalator that didn't work and the Brunel tunnel was going to have a spiral ramp down to the tunnel but they ran out of money.

They have all been closed for long periods recently - Elephant for rebuilding, Queensway for lifts, Wapping for ELL extension.

is the connection something to do with lifts? Not directly, but lifts were the cause of the link. Is it something to do with recent station refurbishment/ engineering works? No. Although thinking along these lines will help you identify station A.

Nothing directly to do with escalators, and nothing at all to do with floodgates or engineering works.

All four stations were closed around the same time for lift replacement?

Although all four were closed around the same time, it was to do with the lifts but it wasn't for lift replacement.

nothing to do with gates at all.
In addition to all closing about the same time, they all reopened about the same time.

In addition to all closing about the same time, they all reopened about the same time. This got me thinking that it must have been some sort of emergency issue, like the escalator crisis a few years ago. And a bit of research, notably www.davros.org/rail/culg/vertical.html, revealed that they all closed (as did several others) because of the firefighters' strike in 2002-03.

Correct, this is the answer we're after. Stations that are (or at least were at the time, I don't know if any have changed since) only practically accessible by lift, including the four I selected here, closed. The URL above was my primary source too and goes into more detail.
