Hi all,
Can I just clear it up because I am not 100% certain; what is the difference between network and national rail?
To my understanding it is:
NETWORK RAIL - In charge of the actual lines (e.g. ECML) and it's equipment as well as 18 stations which have many interchanges (because all other stations are operated by the company e.g. Winchmore Hill is maintained by First Capital Connect et cetera.)
NATIONAL RAIL - The term used to describe the group of train operators with their services across the overal system whether it be First Capital Connect or First Hull trains et cetera.

AIUI, National Rail is not an official description of anything! Folks use it when they want to distinguish between (say) LU and the rest of the network, but are not sure which bit of 'National Rail' applies. Some use it to refer to all the TOCs put together, others to drivers as a whole regardless of their employing company etc. It can also refer back to things set up and/or operated by British Rail, such as quoting their rule book or signalling. In other words National Rail is a getout clause!! (Network Rail refers to one specific company, the one that runs the tracks and is responsible for the infrastructure).

Cheers Phil Yep thought so about network rail. As for National Rail, I suppose it is used formally i.e. DVAs etc. so isn't too much of a made up piece of colloquial language!

"National Rail" is used by LU all the time.....then theres 'National Rail Enquiries', the National Rail timetable... In fact there's a Wikipedia page that says "National Rail is a brand name of the Association of Train Operating Companies ". So I think you're wrong Phil!

There are specific mentions of National Rail in the Railways Act 1993.

Why has this thread been moved to rant area? It is not intended to be a rant, but a general question?

So I think you're wrong Phil! Yup - thought I could be! But it is still used by the public as a phrase when they don't know who's responsible! I never realized that ATOC had registered it as a trading name though. Thanks for that!
