The odd R stock train ran after uncoupling I belive. These ran as 5 car trains- DM-NDM-UNDM+UNDM-DM because 6 cars was impossible. Remember, post 1971, R stock was either formed of DM-NDM-NDM-NDM-UNDM+UNDM-DM or DM-NDM-UNDM+UNDM-DM+UNDM-DM

No doubt this was used as a last resort as the CO/CPs on the circles went from 5 to 6 cars in 1959-60 as a result of overcrowding - so I guess a 5 car R stock in the mix was fairly unpopular.

Caused a bit of a problem if the crew had to be relieved as the Met drivers weren't trained on R stock. Someone told a story about that somewhere...
Sundays were pretty quiet back then weren't they?

I am fairly certain that District Circles were crewed by District staff and 'Met' Circles by Met crews. I don't think they were rostered to work each other's duties. It may have been that trains could have been moved 'in an emergency' by the other line's crew, if only to get it out of the way.
Slipping back into "reminiscing" mode for a moment, Met crews from Baker Street, Neasden, Uxbridge and Rickmansworth all had some Circle duties until OPO. In 1973, when I worked at Neasden in the 'running' office, there was one Sunday duty (No.38) which had seven Circles (3+3 was the norm for Neasden). This was during the appaling guards' shortage and the duty was often uncovered - even Sundays at (then) time and three quarters didn't attract volunteers, especially with seven Circles.

reganorak is correct. DR men did Sunday Circles. That was the whole point, to keep some of them trained on the Circle. I think they were all PG men.
They did run the occasional 5-car R Stock. I was doing Met Circles in those days and I sometimes saw them. No one really noticed the shorter trains then as we didn't get the traffic we get today.
Poor old Neasden - couln't hack 7 Circles. Most of our were 8s.

I don't remember 5 car R stock at any time, but then I went from the DR in mid 1973.
I did manage a back to front R stock one Sunday. there was some disruption from cable fires at Hammersmith, so the service was a bit disrupted. On w/b train got diverted via the top Circle to South Ken. When I took it over there, being very observant, noticed it was wrong way round! so, we managed to get an empty trip round the circle again to get it facing the right way!

reganorak is correct. DR men did Sunday Circles. So where did they get relieved, then as the trains wouldn't go near PG in the course of the day?

Yep, Goucester road. We went pass to EC canteen for grub, and pass back again.
"Special needs" break at Baker St. if we had an R stock would usually shut the job for 15 minutes or so, so I'm told.
