Limited-service routes have sometimes been identified with hatched lines (see above), with some complications added to the map to show where peak-only services ran through to branches, such as that to Chesham on the Metropolitan Line. The number of routes with a limited service has declined in recent years as patronage recovered from its early 1980s' low point. As there are now fewer restrictions to show, and remaining ones are now mainly indicated in the accompanying text rather than by special line markings.

The question here is about the withdrawal of the hatched lines; only to come back last year (also introducing one for Mill Hill East branch). Why did this happen?
Even so the use is still very low; only 4 examples (Kennington, Mill Hill East, Chesham and Woodfood/Roding valley). Before the Barking stretch of H&C was covered, so was Uxbridge - Rayners lane of Picc and the Olympia branch of the District
And what do you prefer, when they have the hatched markings, or none at all?

The car diagrams before the service ended (although sticky labels continued to cover up the branch until new prints were done) were very complicated...nothing as bad as the Northern though when the Nothern City was still LT-operated.

Having hatched lines physically shows an interruption of the service on the map...maybe people pay more attention to this than daggers all over the place?
From memory the ones in the eighties were Kennington, Oly-HSK, Baker St, Aldgate, Aldwych, Ongar, Woodford, Chalfont, Whitechappel-Barking, Shoreditch, Rayners-UXB, Queens Pk-Harrow Weald. Thats all bar three lines, and mostly for large sections too.

In recent time the hatching completely disappeared from the map with the October 2001 issue. The last map to actually show a hatched coloured Line in the Key was the May 2001.
It came back onto the map 14 issues later on the October 2005 but only at Kennington. A mention was made in the Key. The June 2006 map additionally showed the Waterloo & City line hatched, as this was closed at the time for the renewal works.
The very next issue, September 2006, started the recent trend of showing the hatched lines again at Chalfont, Woodford and Finchley with Kennington continuing. Except for the Woodford part mention was made in the Key to the service alterations. That for Woodford just says "No service Woodford-Hainault after 2000 daily" with no explanation why the hatching appears between South Woodford and Woodford! This continues today.
The July 2007 issue omitted any reference the the Central Line in the Key!
Then we move onto the November 2007 issue (the London OvergrounD launch) the hatching at Chalfont, Woodford and Finchley was removed again! (Kennington remained) although the Key still had the same wording. I think this was an error, as if you look VERY carefully you can see the white part of the hatching underneath the overprint!
The hatching again reappeared with the next issue, January 2008, additionally this was the first issue to show the East London Line as hatched after its closure.
Since April 2003 the DLR has had a explanatory hatched colour bar in the Key for the various extensions, King George V and now Woolwich.

I would guess in the late 1960's to coincide with the opening of the Victoria Line and its interchange w/the District at Victoria. 2) Speaking of the peak Districts to Hounslow West, why would the Underground Guide as late as 1968 have an announcement about Hounslow branch passengers needing to chnage to/from the Piccadilly Line at Acton Town--when the service to Hounslow was withdrawn in late 1964?

(Kennington remained) although the Key still had the same wording. Looking at my NOV map yes you're right Kennington remained but also Finchley. Indeed Woodfood wasn't there, but Chalfont was there, yet really faint; like you say printing error!

Looking at the LU archives, I noticed in around 1994, the hatched markings were repositioned: take Chalfont St Latymer - Chesham for example, the Hatched markings came after the Chalfont and Latymer station, as opposed to before in which they did so pre 1994 and again now.
