I was wondering if it is possible when working for TFL or other rail operators, to earn extra time off each year.
For example a driver may be entitled to 35 days annual leave, however choose to work one of his rest days every month to earn 12 lieu days over the year, effectively giving him 47 days bookable leave per year.
Is anything like this available, or possible by negotiating with your line manager?

Unfortunatly not, drivers on LU can't work their rest days. The only real way to get a few extra A/L days is to work more bank holidays.

most company are the same now a days this apply lot of non rail operators to, i no my dad cant do this and hes a lorry driver.

The difference being most mainline drivers do a 4 day week so working the odd rest day isn't as big a problem. (Although a mate of mine is on there and some of their turns make our full whack 8hrs 30min weekend duties look like 4hr snips!) Imagine if we had it on LUL, it would be like every other job with OT where managers have favourites that absolutely cane the OT and others wouldn't get a look in. Not to mention the safety implications of fatigued t/ops hitting signals and having over-runs in order to pay for that big summer holiday. They'd also need less of us if they could run the job on OT.
It should also be noted that we are paid better than a lot of mainline companies and thier rosters are designed around overtime. A mainline driver would have to do a longer working week to take home what an LUL driver takes home as basic.
Our hours are anti-social enough and our pay is good for the industry so personally I wouldn't want to do it. I know there's a lot that would want it and i'm sure there can be some sort of compromise whereby they do all my weekends if they like OT so much - and i'll keep my Monday to Fridays. Oh and they can do my nights and dead lates on OT too! ;-)

thats a shame... are there no other ways, for example unpaid leave. My last company had a scheme where you could 'buy' up to 6 weeks extra annual leave as part of their work-life balance scheme. Is it also possible to book rest days around your annual leave, for example work 10 days, take 4 days rest followed by 14 days annual leave followed by 4 rest days effectively allowing you to take a 3 week holiday whilst only using 2 weeks annual leave. As you can tell i like to go on holiday a lot

Although taking 2 rest days immediately either side of leave is always a winner!

Yes, but thats down to luck, not rostering. One of the problems of allocated annual leave. At least being a reserve member of staff you can increase the chance of getting rest days allocated near your annual leave - but then that creates a problem that prakash mentions, favourites or having to sell your soul to the admin staff for the rest of the year.

You can do it in the Mafia on trainside. I guess it must be more difficult on stations.
