I was bored and started messing around with the Journey Planner, asking how to get to places I knew how to get to.
Blackfriars to Charing Cross Circle/District Line to Embankment Walk to Charing Cross Southeastern to Waterloo East Southeastern back to Charing Cross
Euston to St Pancras Walk to Euston Square Take the Circle Line to Blackfriars Take First Capital Connect to St Pancras
St Pancras to King's Cross Take First Capital Connect to Moorgate First Capital Connect to Highbury & Islington Victoria Line to King's Cross
Harringay to Harringay Green Lanes First Capital Connect to Finsbury Park Victoria Line to Seven Sisters Walk to South Tottenham Overground to Harringay Green Lanes
Paddington to Marylebone Circle Line to Farringdon First Capital Connect to Blackfriars District Line to Embankment Bakerloo Line to Marylebone

Why would it make someone go out of his/her way like that? I guess for something like "Ruislip to South Ruislip" I would get the following: Metropolitan to Harrow-on-the-Hill Chiltern to Marylebone Chiltern to South Ruislip

I was wondering if maybe the National Rail was suggesting routes where you had to ride on National Rail services? It doesn't always work like that of course as the site does sometimes give 'walking' journey options.
But if your journey from one station to another did have to include an NR train at some point I think the journeys mentioned above probably are the quickest way of doing it - except it might be quicker to go from Blackfriars to London Bridge and London Bridge to Charing Cross.

Also St Pancras to King's Cross, I suspect it would be quicker to get any LU line from Moorgate to Kings's Cross rather than going via Moorgate and Highbury and Islington. Alternatively, get the Thameslink to Kentish Town and then the Northern Line down to King's Cross.

I've just tried it with a realistic journey going via London (Northampton to Cambridge) and even then it gives 35 minutes to get from Euston to King's Cross. (TfL say 3 minutes)
Paddington to Liverpool Street (Reading to Audley End) is apparently 55 minutes (TfL say 20 minutes)

At least for South Ruislip to Greenford, it lists the direct Central Line service. However, here is some weirdness produced: Ex-South Ruislip, you go to Greenford, change there for a train to South Greenford, and there take another train to Greenford. Ex-Greenford, take the Central Line to South Ruislip. There you change for a Chiltern service to Gerrards Cross, change there for another Chiltern to West Ruislip, then take the Central back to South Ruislip from West Ruislip.

I think the TfL times are the time it takes from Underground platform to arrive at Underground platform. The NR times factor in NR-LU interchange times and potential delays to ensure connections. Not forgetting people making NR journey's through London are not neccesarily familiar with the underground and may have luggage or even mobility problems. The NR website now has an option for shorter X-london interchanges as part of their advanced options page.

As an aside, try ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/en/pj/sts and type in a few stations. I did Penzance to Paddington 1st class 12 months, and came up with the shocking price of £26,344.00

In contrast, 12 months first class from Ryde St Johns Road to Ryde Esplanade is £188.00 or 0.17p per journey minute per day. Penzance to Paddington works out at 0.21p per journey minute per day (based on the median journey time of the first 5 journeys on a Wednesday morning (5 hours 43 minutes).
I couldn't be bothered to find the distances to work it out by distance

I think that the Ticket to Ryde, which of course gives you the Gold Card, is the same as Newhaven Town-Newhaven Harbour. The cheapest annual First Class season I found out on SWT some time back was Twickenham-St Margaet's, and I think East Sheen [?]-Twickenham was the same. This was the shortest distance at which First Class was available and the cost was something like £288 p.a. At that time these seasons would give you a First Class Gold Card, and two free tickets per year [?], and Barry Doe and I discussed whether they would be FC tickets. If they were, use them, FC on Waterloo-Exeter (as I don't think Paignton's fare is set by SWT) and get your cost back! Othewise it's the Ryde Standard Season, get the Gold Card and use its benefits. When I went to Esplanade station last year I did ask if anyone had popped over to buy their tickets there, and amazingly they had..more money for Islandline than if you buy on the mainland.

I can beat that ATO: £28,092.00
Unfortunately I can't get a weekly season ticket between Watford and Windsor which would be mighty helpful. Any suggestions on best value alternative? Best I can think of is get a Watford Travelcard and then get Zone 6 Boundary extensions every day :S

Another random two as I was bored: Clapham Junction - Vauxhall: £820.00, first class = 0.27p/journey minute. Hereford - Shrewsbury: £4,304.00, first class = 0.22p/journey minute.

Where do they get 45 minutes from Euston to KX? A baby could crawl the distance quicker!
Although I can't remember the precise figure, last time I was in The Capital, I said to my friend, who has a rather broad Yorkshire accent, "Ask that Cabbie how much he will charge from here (KX) to Euston" He did so, and the result was astronomical! At this point, I walked him from KX to Euston...... Maybe just goes to show that for those who don't know the area, prey is rather easy!

Most expensive season ticket on the network that is priced is Berwick upon Tweed to London All Zones Annual Travelcard - works out to about £29k?
And Oracle, you get SWTs gold card benefits as well (6 free weekend day rangers) on the Ryde ticket!
